One thing that has pretty much flown under the radar and not been a topic of discussion since its acquisition is QNX as a company and more importantly, what RIM is doing to leverage the potential revenue streams now available to it.

Yes, we all know that the BB10 platform is entirely based on QNX, but that's where the conversation stops. Most BB fans don't truly understand the power of QNX or what it is and the market certainly doesn't understand it. In fact, the CrackBerry community itself hasn't been very receptive of the QNX based Porsche that Thor unveiled at BB World and the media definitely glossed over it.

This is a company (QNX) that has its RTOS in many of the worlds most sophisticated and secure products that require 100% stability with 0% fail rates. Cars, airplanes, air traffic control towers, nuclear power plants, fire departments (to name a few) all use QNX technology. And the company is rapidly growing in the automotive space in particular with little competition outside of Microsoft.

In its obsession with shiny iToys, the market and the media has failed to realize that RIM is evolving into something much, much bigger than a cell phone competitor. New revenue streams in many different arenas will be opening up in the coming quarters/years.

Yes, smartphones are still RIM's #1 priority, but the extent of this company's expansion in the very near future is yet to be seen and something the market is deeply discounting when it trades the stock at a fraction of its tangible book value. Get ready for a short squeeze of epic proportions when a few analysts become keen to this fact.

Where have you been? I could post dozens of links for QNX discussions but I'll leave it to you to have the joy of discovery.

Dozens of threads on this. Many media reports on this. Dedicated section on this site

BTW, Thor is a Norse God. Thorsten is the CEO of RIM (sorry but that is a personal pet peeve)

Again, you are not telling us anything we don't already KNOW.

In its obsession with shiny iToys,
Can we all finally agree that this is a stupid term that does NOT acquit the person who uses it well at all.

That last paragraph I just have to let go if for no other reason but preserving my sanity.

It's not that the media or the investors do not necessarily understand QNX, and where and how their technology is used, but does RIM have the capacity to remain a sustainable company with their last quarter earnings call, and the newest news of the patent infringement. Their BB10 phone is really a lynch pin for them as a company to make it the next 10 years; that is if we want to see BB10 or BB15 or what ever it is powered automobiles, panes, trains, ect.

Ugh, you really expect people to take you seriously when you say "itoys"?

You do realize qnx powers bmw's idrive system. The same idrive system that was universally scorned by the automotive press and consumers alike. Hmm, maybe that's why rim is getting bad press lately, leftover hatred by the biased automotive press

Anyone who laughs at the BMW iDrive system obviously can't or doesn't own a BMW. The wealthy people I know who have a 5 or 7 series swear by it and are masters of it. Like all things in life, just have to learn it. Of course the masses shoot down anything they don't understand faster than a McDonalds soft drink.

I've said it before buying qNX was the best thing RIM every did. They are able to unlesh this awesome technology on the world. This will be a new way of looking at technology and not just mobile computing but computing in general. Be prepared to watch RIM and QNX sore way higher then apple could ever dream of. Its only a matter of time.
