I currently have a curve 8520 right now and i had it for 4-5 months now. I really like it but i really dont like the size of it. I really prefer the size of bold 9000 cause its really big. And the my curve has only 2g network so my browsing is really slow (im assuming that when my phone is 3g when i browse using wifi, it will be faster. am i right on that? ps. i dont have a data plan)

Ive checked other bold phones and they seem to be larger in size. But most of them arent cheap except for the bold 9000. Are the bold 9700 and 9650 also the same size with the 9000? Should i just stick with my curve 8520 or what?

I know what you mean... my first BB was the 9000! I loved the form factor and the size of the device..very comfortable to use and keyboard is amazing! I'd suggest that one although the 9700 is good (my mom has it but the device is smaller...the 9650 is somewhat between the curve and the 9000!)

You may also would like to look out for the 9900...used price is around $150-$200 depending on condition (Would be worth the extra...)

I used a size comparison online and the bold 9000 really is the biggest. The bold 9650 and 9700 roughly has the same size but at least its not as small as my curve 8520. And another problem with my curve is that the screen is small for me.

I dont want the 9900 cause it has touchscreen and its not cheap.

How bout the battery life of Bold phones? My curve has a **** battery life too (when wifi is used) but when its on standby it lasts for a while.

You know, if you're interested in a bold class device, I'd say go for a 9780.

Battery life, camera and even the browsing was good. Better performance than the 9790 (different processor - the 9790 is a cheaper mediatec , I believe), better camera and battery than the top whack 9900! It's a solid performer.

No where as good as a Bb10 device - but then you know this and are not considering them (they are expensive, though, second hand; it's gotten cheaper!)

If you want something a step up from the curve, I'd say that the 9780 is spot on. And the keyboard, totally different from the curve line! Sure, not as big as the 9000 but it is seriously good!

I had the earlier Bold 9650, and it froze on me too many times, and I had to conduct a battery pull too many times (eternal clock face icon). Moreover, it was just too slow.

Moved eventually to a 9930, and it was much faster, and it has never frozen. Plus, I really like that it's a touch-screen too, though sometimes I'd like the ability to disable it. Finally, the keyboard was better, IMO.

Bold 9780 is still a little expensive here.

I'm kind of feeling like getting bold 9000 cause its really cheap and the look of it is what I really want because its big. I just hope its as ok as my battery life of my curve 8520.

Battery life on the 99xx really depends on your use and coverage area. I don't use mine much, with the exception of occasional phone calls, texts, and listening to music. With such use, I'll get up to two days out of a charge. However, in poor coverage areas the phone will last about a day, because it's constantly scanning for towers.

Of course the usual tactics, techniques and procedures apply: If you're not using WI-FI or Bluetooth, turn them off. Admittedly, I generally leave Bluetooth on.

One thing to remember, Kiel, that I don't think has been mentioned.

Some 9000 had memory leak issues. You need to stay on top of that if you choose to get it.

I would get the 9700 provided u don't have really big thumbs. It's a pretty small device. The 9000 had a very big keyboard and it was soo comfortable to type on. But if don't have big fingers the 9700 will do wonders.

I would say go with the 9700. I've owned all three. The 9000 and that trackball is bound to give you problems. The OS is also relatively outdated. The 9700 is upgradable to OS 6 which is definitely a plus. If your hands aren't humongous then you won't have a problem adapting to the smaller keyboard aswell.

Of course, I don't know where you reside but i'd get a 9900 which was by far my favorite phone (after my Z10 ) and the 9780 isn't too much of an upgrade save for the upgraded Ram and processor which won't matter since your most likely not going to be doing anything too taxing on the device.

Not necessarily. I wanted you to be aware that some 9000 had memory leaks. If you go with it you need to manage that.

The 9780/9790 are solid devices.

I used my 9000 for 4 years until I switched to the Q10 two months ago. I loved the 9000. The 9900 and Q10 are very similar in size to the 9000, but the 9000 is thicker and has a luscious leather back. It always went naked in a holster. Very sturdy.

That being said, I was finding it pretty slow at the end and doesn't have much memory for apps. But it is a wonderful workhorse and comfortable phone to use. If I were looking for a legacy phone today though, I would consider the 9900. Good luck!!

I hear ya... Honestly I loved the 9000. I even got a replacement housing for mine back when I upgraded to the 9900, but didn't get around to installing it. I wanted to get back that fresh look. I really loved the Bold and I still have it in its box lol --> still works!

Coming from the 8520 I don't think you will have any issues (it will definitely be an upgrade for you). Keep in mind many offering advice on the forums may have experiences with newer devices which would inevitably lead them to suggest those they had best results with! If you like the 9000 get it, especially if it fits your budget! It's all about preference

Only downside to the device is the memory leaks like qbnkelt mentioned. Once you keep on top of it, you'll be fine. Plus you'll have many apps like quickpull etc that would help you out lol. Forgot about that app..would be the first app I download or recommend for legacy devices...

I have to contradict a post or two but the 9650 has probably been my longest running BB and has served me wonderfully. I'm not a social networking person, but for writing, and the apps I use to manage my finances and other personal stuff, it's been great. Very rare I'd ever have to do a battery pull, and charge it with the dock. Keep a lot of photos and music with me on a 32gb sd card. Just my two cents, but the 9650 was/is a decent device.

Since you are getting it second hand , go for the 9900.
It is more expensive than the 9000 , but well worth it.
It resembles the 9000 in look and size , but with better OS and more apps.

I would get a 9700 and leave it running on OS 5. All legacy BlackBerry handsets have memory leak issues due to the way the JVM implementation works and the silliness of integrated application memory scheme. 9000 was particularly notorious when it comes to memory leaks. 9700 was a lot better due to much larger application memory (256 MB vs 128 MB) and better memory management of OS 5.

Hybrid OS is simply taking the best parts of other OS version and making it one complete version. Best radio file etc.

I never had a problem with the trackball on my 4 year old 9000.

Yeah... it's not too bad. Cleaning it is pretty easy too and simple (some suggest rubbing alcohol and a q-tip etc). Even so, it's pretty cheap to replace...approximately $10

It hasn't been mentioned, but, the Torch 9800 can be bought for a very reasonable price used and has the Bold keyboard and touch screen... I found a unlocked one on newegg.com for about $200 and the phones they sell are like new...

I recall the trackpad being similar price actually! many DIY videos that prove to be helpful too (same with the trackball, you can DIY).

Regarding the 128MB ram... I can't remember how much is allocated to application memory (i'd say approximately 25-30mb). Once you stay on top of it, you'll be fine. (I normally set the BB button on long press to show open apps and close any apps running in the background). You will see the difference when alot of apps are opened, the device will start to slow down a bit, but once you close off the open apps you'll be fine.
