    Hey guys,

Does verizon allow you to have a Blackberry without a data plan? Could you use a blackberry with a basic phone and text messaging plan?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

I know you *can* use them without a data plan, though it takes away from the basic functionality of the blackberry, imo.

Don't know about Verizon specifically though.

VZW will not allow you to purchase a BB phone without a data plan. If you want that then consider T Mobile.

Verizon requires you to sign up for the $24.99/500 MB plan or the $29.99/Unlimited (is what they call it, probably ~5GB limit realistically) plan with any Blackberry.

Verizon makes a ton of money off their data plans as Blackberries become more popular and fashionable with the average American. It is mandated that you get at least the $30 a month data plan (which is unlimited usage, unlimited email) when you purchase any blackberry.

If you go buy a used CDMA blackberry elsewhere and try to use it on your current plan (by going to the service counter and activating it) they will also make you get a data plan even though its an old phone.

However, a blackberry without internet is just a phone. VZW blackberries do not have wifi capabilities (don't ask why) so you would not be able to do anything except text and make phone calls.

Recommendation: Get the data plan, it will change your life

There's no WiFi on any CDMA BlackBerry devices, so that wouldn't work even if Verizon didn't require a data plan for all BlackBerries.

anytime you go online to check messages it activated the automatic ping to the internet and every time it does this it charges you for air time. I've seen $1000 bills from this. I wouldn't get a BB without a data plan.
