Is it possible to put two different Blackberry software packages on the same desktop?

Yes. Are you meaning Operating Systems? If so, go to Control Panel, and make another User Account.

Yes. I just installed the new OS in a separate directory. I had 4.2.2.176 and 4.2.2.196 both installed at the same time on my laptop. The first time I ran the Application Loader, it detected the presence of the .196 and asked if I wanted to upgrade. When I needed to roll-back, I just deleted the .196 version and App Loader downgraded me.
