Op, (1) no marketing for bb10? - there is marketing for sure, the BB marketing dollar spent at time more than RD/MFG... they spent wisely? I guess you didn't even recall the purple smoke, Alicia Keys, etc. the marketing prefer to spend money on social media influencer rather than boots on the ground hand held user for the new platform, the results is predictable. - people standing infront of the demo didn't know how to turn it on... (2) no retailer. They couldn't... BB don't have steve Jobs dare to rub the carrier on the wrong way... BB afraid of carrier - their BIS SAF is depend upon carrier to collect it... remember, their were very few un-locked at time... carrier is their distribution life line. Open a retail store means suicide. (3) BB10 not that great at the start- it is industry OS QNX, stripe down to form mobile OS with memory eating monster... (at time, 1Gb BB10-001 was not enough... even 2Gb barely run.. sometimes, had to be on sleep mode in order to prevent battery drain... combine with small battery of z10, you really don't have that much choice). BB10 is great after 10.3.2... rush to market didn't pay... android run time a short cut to get app was quick to death path (4) get rid of hardware was Chen's Boss' idea - possibly after listen to the analysts... software suppose to be high margin, selling patent suppose to collect money (check in the mail as they call it), BES for all platform was dream to dominate the business... that battle still going on (under estimate the cloud was the down fall.. no body answer the call when IBM knock on the door way back in 2011). rest are history.
(5) this is for the other guys voice Gov support of Auto in time of needs - Not Canadian Gov. BB want to buy Notel assets, was blocked by Gov... if it allow to do so, the world will be a different place. Remeber, Canadian Gov didn't help Notel, not Avro Arrow, not BB... They did provide R&D Tax credit, but when the R&D hardware shut down, so goes the credit... Be fair to the BB, when the two co-CEOs lost interest in BB (one want to buy football team, the other focus on quantum computing), the infight to control the company with all the peter's principle actors from US vs. EU (Canadian was lost already at that time) was too much burden to carry buy the workbees... even with SAF million per month pool of money... History is not so kind to BB...
Is it possible for BB rise up in handset? dream on. Sure it is possible, try to convince Mike L jump back to be steve J? not sure he want it... (last Friday news paper showed his quantum computing in waterloo was consider next gen platform...he got bigger fish to fry).

wondering what BB is doing on the oppotuniety showcased by desarster: completely lose of communication after the storm wireless system. Haidi and 9-11 showed powerful evidence of BB BIS system, efficient compressed text message kept the things running. After 10 more years, the wireless network progressed so much but proven useless when electricity went down and cell tower damaged. people seek wifi hot spot (few land line) to keep info, but not sufficient. why with all the required risk mitigation from project mgr is not enough for critical communication? (until military showed up...) - possibly those risk mitigaton/assessment writen by MBAs? All the media blame the logistic for lack of action, but it is the communication that lacking to prevent the structure for logistic take place... BB should be able to fill the hole (server farm in canada used to be effective, but now gone... cloud appear to be useless when the power is gone...3G/4G are great to update your facebook, but when you need water, food, BBM with BIS might be a better bet). IMHO.

Or the multiple mini bis outages since then
BIS servers still exist just service providers aren't paying the fees
You also have other programs that compresses better and not so limited to blackberry browser or bbm or even centralized
