I spoke with my "connection" over at Verizon Wireless who confirmed there is in fact trouble in Blackberry land. Most Verizon customers can send messages, but still cannot receive them. The outage may take up to 12 hours (4pm EST) when I callled.

The support specialist that I spoke with after confirming the trouble gave me a whopping $2.00 discount for today's trouble. Love those VZW folks

I seem to be good to go...but think there's still a lot of messages to come through from earlier today that haven't yet.

But messages sent right now from other accounts are coming through instantly.

I'm new to having a BB as of this year (8830) and have had many a glitch so far (I had to exchange my 8830 for a new one within the first 30 days), but this is definately taking the cake. I am a Verizon user in LA and haven't received an e-mail since 6 AM PST this morning on either my Yahoo!, Gmail or BB.net account on my 8830. Anyone else in LA and a Verizon user having this much trouble? Thanks for any encouragement/feedback!

Ok, I don't have a signal and not had one for over 4 hours. I have the big red X where the bars should be and I have gone to the t-mobile store and got a new sim card and rest my bb soft (alt, del, caps) and pulled the battery etc. I travelled from Nashville, TN to Birmingham Al and about 1/2 way I lost my signal. when I rest it say searching for network then eventually comes up with no signal.

    Anything else I can do?

Is it t-moble or my phone?

Can anyone tell me if this is just blackberry service or is it affecting phone service? BTW< I am roaming when my services cut off

I didn't even know there was an issue until about 5:00 when I checked my email on the computer.

As of now, I'm still not getting any email on my BB. I'm in NJ if that matters, but I think it's nationwide for the most part.

Doesn't affect phone service for me, it's an issue with RIM

Apparently the issue has been fixed...it'll just take time for services to restore to normal, which means there'll still be delays in receiving email.

For me on Rogers in Canada, I didn't really notice anything until about 5pm...throughout the day I thought it was working fine. Really curious to hear the full story in the days ahead.

    E-Mail Outage Strikes BlackBerrys
    September 7, 2007 - 10:26pm

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A software glitch shut down e-mail service for some BlackBerry users Friday, and delays were still being felt hours after the problem was fixed.

Research in Motion Ltd., the Waterloo, Ontario-based company that makes the ubiquitous mobile device, said no e-mails were lost in the shutdown that affected an unspecified number of customers in North America who subscribe to the BlackBerry Internet Service. Phone service and text messaging were unaffected.

However, even after e-mail service was restored, slowdowns persisted into Friday night as message backlogs were being cleared out. The company did not provide an estimate of when service would return to normal and did not specify the software problem.

"(Research in Motion) is continuing to monitor the situation and apologizes to customers for any inconvenience," the company said in a statement.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server, a higher tier of software geared toward large businesses, was not affected.

Service outages have been rare in the BlackBerry's eight-year history, but the outages that have surfaced have prompted angry backlashes against the company because of its lengthy silences about what caused them and the cryptic and jargon-laden explanations that eventually emerge.

Research in Motion waited two days after a major outage in April before telling customers that a minor software upgrade had crashed the system. The outage prompted grumbles from always-on users all the way up to the highest levels of business and government, including the White House and the Canadian Parliament.

More than 8 million people have BlackBerry subscriptions worldwide. The company has relationships with 270 carriers in 110 countries.

Whatever "issue" that is now resolved, I'm still not getting any emails. it's now 10:02pm (pst), the last email i got was from 7:32 am. my husband who is on the same att family plan as i am, has not noticed any problems all day. he had his bb plan for over 2 years, i just got one a few months ago. i wonder if that has to do with who got affected.

Still don't have email, but, I have come to the conclusion that 364 days per year, RIM and our carriers do a pretty good job. Sometimes, stupid things happen and you just have to deal.

conclusion reached after a Friday evening cocktail....

I'm in Southern New Jersey, I had e-mail most of the day, but right now the only e-mail I am getting is work. (Lucky Me) G-mail and blackberry.net e-mail stopped working around 2pm. I'm glad its not my BB...hopefully they fix it soon!
In Toronto, there was a power outage in our office at 2:00 pm EST (Sept. 7) that lasted about one to two minutes. It was very, very windy at that time.

We have been able to send and receive e-mails all day.

I bought my Blackberry 8300 on Thursday and I spent all day today without being able to receive email. This is my first Blackberry and my first impresion of the service. At first I thought it was AT&T's fault but soon learned that it was a RIM outage; the AT&T message board is also littered with "no service" threads. It appears to be resolved now but it sure put a big question mark on what to expect out of this thing.

I hope this is not a sign of things to come with this device which I presumably bought to improve email handling. I had a Sidekick for over 2 years and this didn't happen a single time.

mvanderlinden, this has only happen TWICE in a year! I think it's still a brilliant service, you were just unlucky the day you bought it. Now, think about us addicts, that have had BlackBerry's for years, and noticed we were not getting emails...

Well, as you can imagine, we were pulling our hair out...
