Your BlackBerry will detect when the battery is fully charged and will stop charging. So you don't have to worry about overcharging your phone. However, car chargers are not a reliable way to routinely charge your phone. They tend to charge more slowly than wall chargers, and some won't charge a BlackBerry, due to variances in tolerances in the components. If the cheap charger will charge your phone, you don't have to worry about it hurting your phone, but you shouldn't depend on it as your only charging source.
Thank you Jeff. I was able to charge my blackberry today in my car. It works just fine. I am glad that it doesn't harm my blackberry. Thank you Jeff!;)
Good to know... Thanks for posting this and asking the question. I assumed it would be Ok, but to honest... I wondered.
I see you joined CB in October... Welcome to Crackberry where knowledge is power :D
I think you have the same charger as me and it has worked flawlessly on two berrries.
In my experience, VPCs give you a rapid charge and the device COULD be overcharged because the car battery can not read when the battery is full and will continue charging the battery. Most of my customers with bad batteries use their VPC often, I reccomend only using it as a last resort. Your wall charger will stop charging the battery when it is full so you can leave it on all night and wake up with a full charge every morning.
If there is a risk of overcharging using a generic charger, then what about using a genuine BlackBerry car charger?
As I understand it, the problem is not with the charger but the power source, the car battery doesn't recognize when the phone battery is full. The brand of charger is irrelavent as long as it's designed for bbs so the connectors are correct.
There should NOT be a problem with overcharging. The charge control is within your BlackBerry, the charger is a brainless device which provides a fixed charging voltage and the correct physical connection.
Right, if you read my second post you'll see I said the problem is the power source, not the charger. I could be wrong, but in 5 years of cellular exp. EVERY customer with a 'bad" battery told me they use their VPC very often..
I use my car charger and pc/usb charger exclusivly w/o any issues. Have been for 3 years now. Can't remember the last time I used a wall charger...

That's really good, it's easier I'm sure. I was just sharing my experience, that's all.
The car battery does not control the charging. Nor does the car charger. Charging is controlled by the BlackBerry. However, I'm not surprised that you see problems with customers that exclusively use car chargers. Car chargers are notoriously unreliable, with a wider variation in performance than wall chargers. Also, if you leave your phone plugged into the car charger will starting the car, you expose the phone to voltage and current transients caused by starting.
The fastest and most reliable way to charge your phone is by wall charger. Car chargers work, and not everybody that uses them exclusively will have problems, but more people will have problems than don't.
Thanks Jeff, you are most reliable.
To be honest... I've got so many Cigarette Plug power sockets in my vehicle, I just keep one of these in my centre console for whatever I need to charge:
