BlackBerry can rise from the ashes as a leader in MDM | PCWorld

    Tony Bradley | @gettechspective

    Jun 28, 2013 9:45 AM

    Meet BlackBerry: The MDM company

I sounded the death of BlackBerry as a mobile platform or device manufacturer more than a year ago, predicting that BlackBerry Mobile Fusion would be the future for BlackBerry. I still think the company can emerge from its ashes and re-establish itself as a mobile device management (MDM) company.

It seems BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins is beginning to see things that way, too. He devoted much of the earnings call to spinning the quarterly results. Heins' message was essentially Dont pay attention to the dismal smartphone sales and revenue figures, just look at the silver lining: BlackBerry isnt just a device companyit can live on as an enterprise mobility company.

BlackBerry is already marching in that direction, starting with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. The company has also announced plans to make BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) available on iOS and Android. More recently, it added that BlackBerry Secure Work Space will also be offered for iOS and Android. Do you see the pattern?

The ship has sailed on BlackBerry as a mobile platform, and BlackBerry smartphones and tablets are not long for this world. But many companies remain entrenched in the BlackBerry ecosystem. They love BBM. They appreciate the security and the control BlackBerry provides. By extending the features and capabilities that customers love most about BlackBerry to iOS and Android, BlackBerry enables its customers to incorporate or transition to other platforms without losing the BlackBerry mobile-management tools they value so highly.

BlackBerry invented mobile device management before there was an MDM market. It makes sense for BlackBerry to surrender the mobile platform and device market, and assert its role as the dominant MDM player.

It's good news for BB as a company, but I see nothing in this acquisition that could be helpful in moving considerably more BB10 devices.

Mobile iron kill itself off. CFO and CEO are being investigated by the SEC, there will certainly be civil charges but what looms is if a case of criminal fraud can be made. They're done.

The days of these mom and pop MDM solutions are over. The needs of enterprise has change and well, these small outfits just don't cut it anymore. Blackberry's competition is shifting to the big guns ( IBM and perhaps Microsoft).

Oh, the BB10 ship sailed off a looooong time ago.

Acquisitions like these, reinforce the fact that BlackBerry isn't about Hardware anymore.

BlackBerry to Buy Good Technology for $425 Million - Bloomberg Business

by Gerrit De Vynck and Olga Kharif

    September 4, 2015 9:37 PM JST
Updated on September 5, 2015 1:14 PM JST

BlackBerry Ltd. agreed to buy Good Technology Corp. for $425 million, gaining new mobile device-management customers while removing one of its competitors in that business.

Good Technology, based in Sunnyvale, California, builds applications to help employees work securely from their personal phones. It counts all of the G7 governments and the worlds 10 largest banks and law firms among its 6,200 customers, BlackBerry said in a statement Friday.

The acquisition removes a rival that had taken some of BlackBerrys clients as more workers switched from employer-provided BlackBerrys to their own iPhones and Android devices.

Sometimes your best defense is a good offence, said John Butler, senior handsets analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. This is good for BlackBerry in the sense that it gives them greater scale and therefore a greater ability to compete with larger rivals.

Bigger tech companies such as SAP SE, Microsoft Corp. and International Business Machines Corp. can sell tools to track mobile devices at cheaper prices by bundling them in with larger software sales, Butler said.

BlackBerry will bring together Good Technologys secure e-mailing apps with its expertise in helping companies manage and secure thousands of connected tablets and phones, Chief Executive Officer John Chen said on a conference call.

BlackBerry and Good combined will raise the bar in the enterprise mobility market, he said. We are expecting significant operating expense synergies.

    Postponed IPO

Good Technology postponed a planned initial public offering last year because of worsening market conditions, people familiar with the matter said at the time. Selling to BlackBerry makes sense for both customers and shareholders, Good Technology CEO Christy Wyatt said in a phone interview.

Earlier this month, a jury found MobileIron Inc. didnt infringe Good Technologys patents and that some of those patents were invalid. That could potentially have impacted the companys valuation, said Matt Larson, a technology patents litigation analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence.

The litigation with MobileIron certainly called into question the enforceability of some of these patents and the underlying strength of some of their existing agreements, he said.

Good Technologys revenue from intellectual property represented only about $25 million of the $200 million yearly revenue, Chen said.

Its not that big of a component, he said.

BlackBerry could be in a better position to monetize Good Technologys patents by bundling them into its existing licensing deals, Larson said.

When you have the added clout that BlackBerry offers they may be able to bring that licensing revenue up, he said.

BlackBerry expects to book around $160 million revenue from Good Technology in the first year, after writing down some of the companys deferred revenue, Chen said. That would help the CEO hit his goal of doubling yearly software revenue to $500 million by March 2016.

BlackBerry rose 0.5 percent to C$9.91 at 1:21 p.m. in Toronto. The acquisition is expected to close later this year.

Outside of their established customer base, does GOOD offer any value proposition that BlackBerry currently lacks? Is there anything GOOD does better than BlackBerry?

I have used GOOD, BES10, and BES12. GOOD had a small advantage over BES10 initially. BES12 is a completely different product from BES10 however and it completely blows GOOD away. GOOD operates on the same technology that BES5 was when it comes to email handling.

BlackBerry did miss out on acquiring a lot of iOS and Android customers, and also customers who were concerned with their financial situation. BlackBerry actually regularly sends reps to it's larger clients to give them a more inside view of how they are doing financially and what some of their road map is, but buying GOOD gives BlackBerry a chance to get back the customers they lost while they had the for sale sign up.

May I Ask if GOOD accommodates BlackBerry 10 OS devices and BlackBerry legacy OS devices?

    Why negative?
It's how such a decision is viewed by the market, not a lot more.

BlackBerry could have used the money spent on Good for hardware projects. They didn't do that however.
Just a simple example of why buying Goodis a pretty obvious message concerning their hardware business.
