You don't need to transfer any of your information... Simply install Desktop Manager, create a back up, install the OS update, and then connect your phone.

Exactly his point. Apple provides near identical functionality on Mac and Windows. RIM... Yeah, not so much. That's why Apple can sell more phones in 3 months than RIM can in a year. It's time for RIM to wake up if they want to stay alive in the consumer segment. Even Nokia has started to provide Mac tools comparable to their Windows offerings.

Sooo....get a PC. The reason that macs don't work well with devices other than Apple's: Apple is extremely greedy and proprietary. They can teach the whole world about corporate arrogance. It is also the reason that they are a very distant second to the Microsoft-driven computers. Just take a look at what it costs for data packages on an iPhone outside the US and the comparative cost on a RIM device. The iPhone costs at least 3 times and you still don't get unlimited data!!

That's so not the answer. Haha. I'm a Windows user, but I want a Mac really badly. I'm waiting for the new Macbook Pros.

Why the **** would he go out and buy a PC just so he can update his cell phone software? That's ridiculous.

Also there is no need to leave data on a friends pc if you need to borrow one and it's not like you need to do os updates often. You can actually keep a os desktop manager and a back up right on your memory card. Extract it the pc to run it and pack it all right back on there. Done

RIM is narrow minded in assuming that everyone has access to a PC. OSX is a much more stable OS than any Windows OS. They are supposed to be working on a Mac version of the software in the future. I also would NEVER taint my Mac with any windows software. Luckily for me i never upgraded my old pearl so PocketMac worked fine for me.

And i am not sure where you live, but my iphone data is unlimited at 30$ a month which is directly comparable to BIS at 30$ (att vzw). Other data plan pricing outside of the US is directly related to the carrier and not Apple itself.

Maybe you're just jealous because you don't have a mac?? I kid, i kid.

But you do have quite a large amount of animosity against the product.

So there are four times as many people using Macs as PC's? Obviously not. But there are ten times as many people using PC's as there are Macs. Apple knew if the iPhone was going to be successful it would have to be PC friendly because the majority of people use Windows. Apple is only Windows friendly when they know that they can't successfully sell their hardware without Windows access. Otherwise, they have been very narrow minded about opening up to Window's users.
That's not to say that I don't think Rim should support Macs. With Apple's increased market share in the last couple of years, it just makes sense. But doing so won't significantly increase Rim's sales.

I wouldn't say that. In my opinion, part of the matter is that developers create buggy software. Also, a large majority of users are not very computer literate and create the problems that make the system unstable. My reason for saying this is that I have two Windows machines that run nearly flawlessly. It's been a few months since I've had to do a reboot.

I'm sorry i just get defensive about my mac I agree with you though, and had all this complaining come before the "apple boom" (i.e. ipods and more popularity with Apple as a whole); i would say tough luck, you know macs are not that popular find your way around it... but with mac's being much more popular these days, more companies are making osx compatible programs. It shouldn't be too hard for RIM to do the same...thats all i'm saying.

EDIT:: and i KNOW that people have strong opinions on both..so instead of telling the OP that he should get rid of his mac (which obviously he doesn't want to do) - let's try and give him/her some viable options to keep them happy with their berry! the simple solution is exactly what someone suggested further on in the thread, borrow the friend's comp, do a backup (not a sync), update, and then, put the backup file on a flash drive and you're done....

if you're going to have a blackberry and a mac, it's worth it to go someplace like newegg.com and buy a copy of win2K or XP, the cheapest one you have, and then run parallels or vmware, 99% of the stuff you can do on your mac, but, the backups and the software updates you just won't do without winblows until RIM gets off their asses and comes out with support for other OS's.

It wouldn't make sense if Apple didn't do this because it would severely limit their market for the iPhone.
WINDOWS didn't make Blackberry Desktop Manager RIM did, so why blame APPLE for not making a version of the DM when it's not their job? that's like whining that X car company didn't put something in that Y car company did.....

Sooo....get a PC. The reason that macs don't work well with devices other than Apple's: Apple is extremely greedy and proprietary. They can teach the whole world about corporate arrogance. It is also the reason that they are a very distant second to the Microsoft-driven computers. Kudos, that was spoken like a true M$ brainwashed massochist. That's not the reason at all, it boils down to RIM hasn't released a version of DM for ***ANY OS OTHER THAN WINDOWS***, and there are quite a few versions of linux out there that're free, so, it's not a money thing. For a side thought, the software RIM offers for the APPLE users interfaces with FREE software for sync instead of software that you have to buy, and more phones/cameras/any devices have drivers preinstalled in OSX than in windows, so, it's got nothing to do with apple being greedy or not working well with devices other than apple devices.

RIM is narrow minded in assuming that everyone has access to a PC. OSX is a much more stable OS than any Windows OS. They are supposed to be working on a Mac version of the software in the future. I also would NEVER taint my Mac with any windows software. pocketmac works fine on all 4.5OS phones now too....

I hate your situation for you. But you have chosen to be in a vast minority with mac. For what you paid for it you could have bought three pc's. I agree completely here, unfortunately there are a few down sides that we mac users accept in stride with having computers that last as long and run as stable as macs do.

That's not to say that I don't think Rim should support Macs. With Apple's increased market share in the last couple of years, it just makes sense. But doing so won't significantly increase Rim's sales.
That's true, HOWEVER, the reason is usually, most mac users have more apps than just DM that they need occasional winblows access to, so they've pony'd up the funds for a copy of windows and either installed via bootcamp, parallels, or vmware...or, they're less than scrupulous like some many windows users and just pirate a copy of win2K/winXP and do one of the above solutions as well....

...and would have had 3 POS and migraines, and viruses, and a crappy OS!!
True, but, you know, windows users don't like to admit that their OS's aren't as good (because y'know, they don't want to acknowledge that Microsoft actually turned to Apple and licensed their methodology of making the OS **LOOK** smooth, however, they failed at making it as streamlined and stable). As far as the virii, well, there's not a lot you can say there, it's not the hardware, it's the software, and the fact that more people want porn on windows machines means more porn sites can slam your windows machines with adware/spyware/virii, and, the fact that if it's going to install and modify the system in any way on a mac, you've got to approve it by typing in an administrator password.....

I agree here, but, part of it is the level at which windows allows other apps to dig their fingers into the OS as opposed to what OSX does, I have very few apps that I can't throw on a flash drive and run on any of my three macs or come over to a friend's house and plug into their mac and run with all of my settings and info staying exactly the same, whereas I know of very few windows apps that are capable of the same thing....

That's ludicrous. I use both daily in video production in editing labs and have no more stability problems on Windows than I do on OSX. Apple included "force quit" in their software for a reason
I use both daily in every day use both for work and for pleasure, and I can say I have more stability problems with windows than OSX but, mostly it stems from crappy software on the windows machines....oh, and force quit was built in as a way to stop a crappy third party app from causing the whole system to crash, just like task manager in winblows.....

Your so hard on me shorty! I agree to an extent. But you shouldn't buy a, lets say a Masarati, then get mad cause Auto Zone has no parts for it.
true, one can't complain because you buy something that's upper echelon and you have to do a little extra work to make it happy with the standard grade stuff

I have been stuck on 4.2 since I got my curve because I love my berry and my iMac alike, just a week or so back I read so much about RIM is soon going to give a lot of love to us Mac people. You cant blame anyone, I was just reading about the Gphone and iPhone clash happening because one of the Google owners is on Apple's BOD and some of the best iPhone apps are from google. So is the case with RIM as well. I've been patiently waiting for quite sometime but day after tommorow (hopefully) the bold will be in my hands.
I think the biggest overlook that most people have is not realizing that while windows users have had to PURCHASE the ability to sync their software to PURCHASED software, most phones that're worth having were able to sync via bluetooth to software that's built into OSX.....now that apple is becoming more popular as a whole, it's exceptionally aggravating when a company essentially ignores apple users as a whole, and instead looks at a third party that makes an interface app and says "oh here, you can have their software for free". That being said, at least RIM's giving BB users pocketmac for free, WM5/6 devices are up the creek in having to pay for a way to sync their data to OSX.

Back to the point at hand.....there are a lot of ways to get around the problem you've got with the bold, that don't consist of returning it, they do however consist of you either adapting or spending a little bit of money. The DM doesn't leave personal info on the computer in a manner that anything can interpret, it's a file that's a backup of multiple databases and to my knowledge, there's no "reader" that'll allow someone to get into it and find out what the info in it is....

All OSX has to do is work on 4 Apple platforms. Windows has to work on millions of different hardware configurations.

It has to work when God only know what device is added, plugged in or connected, it has to remain as stable as possible when a user adds drivers from three versions ago. OSX works on 1 CPU, Windows works on them all and OSX isn't even compatible with the old CPUs (as far as I'm aware but I'll happily be corrected), Windows is compatible with almost all previous platforms (yes it will be slow if you have a old PC but you can get it to work on most PC's).

Windows has to work with millions of 3rd party software, new and 10 years old, how much 3rd party stuff is out there for Apple?

Windows has to carry on working when ATI brings out a new chip, can you even upgrade the graphics card on a mac (I genuinely have no idea)

In short the job of making windows work is no where near as simple as the job of making OSX work, especially as MS don't have anything like the control over the core hardware that Apple does.

RIM writes the software that RIM writes. The BB was, until fairly recently, aimed at the corporate client, they are going to be almost exclusively windows based. They will write for Apple if there is a demand and if there is no licensing issues from Apple.

I'm not an apple fan (understatement of the century - they can't even get iTunes to work so why anyone would trust them with a whole OS is beyond me) and I won't be buying anything Apple anytime soon (I have an iPod and want to smash it every time I sync it).

If you want an Apple then buy one - you'll pay at least twice as much for the same piece of kit and then you'll need to repurchase all your software, I'll be sticking to my windows based PC's and laptops.

wow, shows what you know, OSX has to work on every hardware config past and present to a certain mark......for example, OS 10.4 (Tiger) will run on a G3 233mhz machine......which has vastly different hardware than my new 2.2ghz core 2 duo....

OH, and if you're counting current platforms.....iMac, mac mini, macbook, macbook pro, mac pro, xserve.....and that's ranging from a tiny desktop, an all in one machine, two varieties of laptops, entry and pro user leveled, desktop machines that're multiple quad core xeon machines, and the rack mount multi-xeon quad core server machines, all running the same OS.....

there isn't QUITE as much hardware variety in the apple world as the windows/*nix world, however, that's part of the quality control of it all, why not blame windows for allowing so many hardware manufacturers to make half assed hardware instead of holding them to a current level of performance and an exact level of compatibility, after all, that's what makes the mac better, is the fact that the OS and hardware are setup to work seamlessly hand in hand instead of "oh, I picked up this board because I like it, and I like this vid card, and this processor" and so on....

oh, just about as much, and no, most 3 party apps that're designed for 2K aren't nearly as stable on any version of Vista as an app that was designed for OS 10.0 is on 10.5.5 (which, incase you're missing the point, is 5 full OS revisions later, so, the equivalent of Win95 apps running WITHOUT ERRORS on Vista)

Windows has to carry on working when ATI brings out a new chip, can you even upgrade the graphics card on a mac (I genuinely have no idea)
yes, it does, and so does the mac, it's called drivers updates....

In short the job of making windows work is no where near as simple as the job of making OSX work, especially as MS don't have anything like the control over the core hardware that Apple does.
you're SO wrong, if anything, you've got it 180 degrees bass ackwards.....the apple deals with compatibility problems when microshaft goes in and says "we're the standard, make your stuff work for us". When Apple released 10.4 and then Adobe released CS2, and there was an incompatibility, rather than waiting for Adobe to patch their product, apple jumped on it and threw a patch out to fix it. when does microsoft patch their OS to make someone else's $1000 software suite work smoother?

RIM writes the software that RIM writes. The BB was, until fairly recently, aimed at the corporate client, they are going to be almost exclusively windows based. They will write for Apple if there is a demand and if there is no licensing issues from Apple.
yes, and "corporate" is a very WIDE range, professional graphics studios have been pro-mac for years, schools balance between pro-mac and pro-M$, mostly depending on the amount of funds available to the school district, and many other corporations are fairly mac friendly, so the "well, the BB is a corporate device" no longer works there, especially since the pearl/curve/thunder/whatever are geared towards attracting CONSUMERS not BUSINESSES. Businesses already know how good the BB is, RIM's job now if they want a bigger market share, is to out do the iphone and other smart devices, and software support for all OS's is part of that.

I'm not an apple fan (understatement of the century - they can't even get iTunes to work so why anyone would trust them with a whole OS is beyond me) and I won't be buying anything Apple anytime soon (I have an iPod and want to smash it every time I sync it).
wow, good to know that you're full of user error then, I've had absolutely no troubles with itunes so, if you're having trouble with it, you obviously shouldn't play with computers, my friend's 5 year old can handle itunes and syncing an ipod without getting angry...on her dad's windows based PC of course...perhaps I could link you up with her and she can help you learn?

If you want an Apple then buy one? - you'll pay at least twice as much for the same piece of kit and then you'll need to repurchase all your software, I'll be sticking to my windows based PC's and laptops.
you're right, I'll pay more for my hardware (not twice as much, I promise), yes, I'll need to re-purchase my software, so will you if your software's not as new, and my mac's software's cheaper. We'll use MS Office for this example, Office 2008 for MAC Home & Student 3 license edition, $150 (oh, and that's the full version, nothing removed), Office 2007 for Windows Home & Student $150 WITHOUT OUTLOOK, or $400 for standard edition, which is the exact same as home and student, but has outlook added......so, wait, my mac version, for $150, comes with entourage which is the mac version of outlook, but, the windows version, if I want the microsoft mail client (which, I need if I want to sync any smartphone to my computer) will run me $250 more?

also, your windows based PC and laptop will require how many dollars worth of anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-adware software throughout it's 4-5 year "usefulness" lifespan......here's a tip, my mac, at 8 years, which I replaced because I wanted the bigger screen (and my cat claimed it as it's bed and was making it overheat during the night, but, y'know, that'll happen on ANY laptop that has a 14lb cat sleeping on the keyboard all night while it's running) never had a single piece of firewall, AV, Anti-spyware/adware/malware software put on it, never needed it, and never would have needed it no matter what I did with it. Oh, and that 8 year old 600mhz laptop, with 384mb of ram, was running Adobe CS2 as well as my windows desktop with 2GB of ram, a 2.6ghz C2D processor, winxp pro, and multiple large SATA2 HD's, it ran Macromedia Studio 8, and other high end apps, which, I'm proud to say, my windows machine most assuredly didn't handle as well.

wow, good to know that you're full of user error then, I've had absolutely no troubles with itunes so, if you're having trouble with it, you obviously shouldn't play with computers, my friend's 5 year old can handle itunes and syncing an ipod without getting angry...on her dad's windows based PC of course...perhaps I could link you up with her and she can help you learn?

you're right, I'll pay more for my hardware (not twice as much, I promise), yes, I'll need to re-purchase my software, so will you if your software's not as new, and my mac's software's cheaper.

    OH YEA!!! What he said!!

oh....and as a side thought.....if you're not even a blackberry user, why, pray tell, are you presuming to dictate to blackberry users what RIM should or shouldn't be doing, what their devices are geared towards, or anything else on the topic.....mac has java, blackberry runs on java, no reason they shouldn't work together, at least WM & mac have a legit reason for not communicating well.....

    Hi
Yes the whole Pc v mac. Mac hands down every time, I have been using macs since they had floppy drives, I even owned a Newton.I have also been with vodafone since mobiles were the length of your arm, so imagine my frustration when the i phone came out on another carrier exclusive. Business reasons prevented switching my number. I took out a contract, once the 3G came out. As a stand alone second phone ( I don't really see it as a phone a small hand held computer which blows you away).I still used my pearl for most calls(like the keys) I could sync every thing, push mail to both phones great. The bold was my upgrade, expected a bit more once you get through the first couple of screens its just like the Pearl.
But the soft ware issue was the final straw. I spent all day Saturday trying to find a software package that would let me solve this. I knew I had the option to use the Macs boot camp and installing windows. Though I didn't want to give up hard drive space or spend 70 on software. The only solution, totally frustrated at RIM. Can't believe in this day and age they would just ignore this section of their market or at least make the ability for the phone to upgrade its self my old sony could do that?
    There ranting over?
I will return the phone and upgrade to something that, calls and has a good camera. Left to use the i phone for everything else, forced out by RIM Ta
However a word to the wise. My biggest regret now was not buying Apple shares all those years ago, when every year you thought would be the last. Now were growing up with a whole i pod generation, macs bigger than ever. The i phone is a business phone so I don't need my Blackberry any more, can live without it, I couldn't have done so with my pearl. If Apple bring out a Nano phone they will do in the rest of the mobile market. The rest won't have to bother playing catch up with there touch screens.
