One thing you may want to keep in mind, turn on wifi will drain battery.

I might be late in mentioning this as it has probably been stated already but If I turn off data only, my wifi won't work. If I turn off mobile network, my wifi will work. This sucks because it means that I wont be able to receive phone calls. Im guessing there is no way around this...

PS. I am using the Bold 9700 on Telus Network.

Also Yes, i could keep the data on and wifi on but I dont want to risk my data being used, since some apps use both. Any input..?

I have 8900 with v4.6.1.315(Platform 4.2.0.108). Do you think upgrading to 5.0.0.428 will really make these app work? I mainly want Yahoo Messenger and Google talk to work over wifi

It would be very useful if we manage to get a Database with this info for every carrier worldwide:
APN, user, pass, BIS service books

i'm trying to have the guys at BlackberryOS to put this DB in their download zone
that means those information are given by the provider right? i realised how i have all the APN address and password already set even if i don't have data plan...

I can't get palringo, beejive or any other type of messenger to work on my Storm 2 9550. They will install perfectly but when I open up the app it freezes with the keyboard showing. I have to do a battery pull to reset the phone. I've tried multiple times nothing.

Also I was using gmail app the last few days then realized I was using my data not the wifi. Customer service removed the added charges which was great.

This is totally ********? Why would applications be written for one or the other? I would think this isn't something that should be in the applications, I would think the Data Service / Wifi switchoff would be a networking level thing....

If I didn't like the camera, trackball, and media player so much I'd be selling my blackberry and switching back to my HTC 8525.

Facebook 1.6 or 1.7 doesn't work for me. Now I have to stick with the browser one, which is terrible. Palringo should work over wifi.

I have some more apps that run over wi-fi, I don't have a list of the ones that don't run.
I have a blog post where I list the ones I use, they are all free, and proven to work, I don't have a data plan on my BB.

Call your carrier and put block on data usage. Turn on data on your phone, (it wont use data as its been blocked by your carrier) keep the mobile network on. And you should be good to go on wifi only. I use it like this.
