You guys can get into exotic definitions all you want, but the common definition of a "web app" is what I stated and what you can find on Wiki and just about everywhere else. If you ask regular person to name a "web app," they'll name stuff like Google Maps, Google News, and stuff of that nature, not a browser.

One of the most-remarked web apps was developed by the Financial Times. The FT went this way, it seems, to avoid Apple's restrictions on apps (contact with the buyers, in-app purchases, etc).

This interview give more information on the FT's experience.

The FT Web app is available in the browser on Apple devices, but also forms the basis of our Android app, which is built using a mix of HTML5 and native technology. The Android app is available on large-screen tablets and small-screen Android phones, and an FT India app available for both Apple and Android devices. We are also looking at launching versions shortly for RIMs QNX platform, Windows 8 and Kindle Fire.

And what is the Financial Times web app exactly? It creates a shortcut that basically opens their mobile optimized site on your browser, just like maps.google.com, news.google.com.

Well, you are on a BB fan site, and people here use RIM's way of talking about web apps. Here it can mean also a stand-alone app developed with WebKit, PhoneGap/Cordova, SenchaTouch ... You don't have to like it, but it is the local usage.
