They were on the OS6 devices -- chips were rated at 800mhz and under-clocked to 624. But I haven't seen that they're underclocking the OS7's.
What does "underclocked" mean exactly.
Underclocked is when the chips are rated for a certain speed say 1000mhz but are only used at 500mhz. It can be a way to save power and lengthen the life of your phones battery.
Thank you.
I believe that the OS7 phones are underclocked as well.
I wish I could underclock it more. (To 1 Ghz)
I think I heard somewhere that there was a Nexus S OS that underclocked the CPU when it was on standby mode to 100 mhz (normal is 1ghz).
I wonder if RIM could do that. Lol.
hmmm. the bold 9900 uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon S2 MSM8655. I doubt it's underclocked. Unless it is in fact using the MSM8655T which is 1.4-1.5GHz?
If that's a built-in feature, that's pretty awesome. I had to root my device and download an app to do just that.

...more importantly, can we ever overclock it? :)

Even if you can overclock to lets just say 1.6ghz
you will not feel it much at all. Ram is more important
When phone starts running slow its cause of Ram.
I would give up my 1.2ghz processor for the curves 800mhz
processor in exchange for more Ram without even thinking about it
(if it was possible).
Yea great idea about underclocking it when its on standby! Like I don't need 1.2 ghz on my torch when I'm not using it. It could make battery soo much better
Exact. I'll add : and reduce heat.
Just to clarify CPU speed does not always equate CPU use. So a lower CPU speed is only really useful if your OS is a resource hog and has many running background applications that are resource sharing.
If you have no real running background apps - CPU speed reductions will have less impact. But it will still have some.
Heat is almost always a cause for concern or an issue with fanless devices. Even my 9900 gets quite warm when uploading big clips or recording HD video in excess of 5 minutes or more. I had to keep it on a headsink which made contact with the metal exterior to cool it.
