If I am using a vzw.blackberry.net address, does that mean that I am on a BIS?

Yes. That is the address you use for direct connection to BlackBerry infrastructure.
When you configure BIS, it will manage all of your email connections.
Keep that one private, the last thing you want is to be SPAMed at that address.

Since you're on BIS it's a good idea to manage your BIS settings through an online account. You can set one up using the link in my signature.
