With an installed 60 Million user data base, this is no small change. In the "olden days" BBM was a reason some bought BlackBerrys in the first place, and more recently it was an opportunity cost for switching to another platform. However looking beyond the 60 Million users, how many of them are in developing countries? Most BlackBerry users here in the states have barren BBM friends lists and quite honestly it's wasted potential. Now that the wildly popular service is going cross-platform, they are building upon the BlackBerry brand. A clear sign that BlackBerry is back and indeed going on the offensive. Coupled with the Q5, Q10, and possible ad revenue generated from cross-platform BBM, BlackBerry has indeed created a stream of revenue that will be enough to sustain them for the next couple of years.

Totally agree, in the western world BBM has lost almost all relevance with BlackBerry's declining market share.

Cross platform had to happen to make BlackBerry a relevant communication tool again in an Android and iOS world.

With the added calling, file sharing, screen sharing, and even bbm exclusive social media (channels), there is HUGE potential here!
