BB10's touchscreen glass quality
- Can anyone fill me up with more details about the BB10's touchscreen glass, quality and everything? I tried to do a search about it but couldn't find any information. Will it be similar to iPhone's which is Gorilla or what? I hope it's not going to be a cheap one like Andriod's or anything.

to find any specifications for the BB10 devices that are anything
more than speculation.07-25-12 09:43 PMLike 0 -

But I hope it's a good glass. I like iPhone's screen. The Playbook, you can tell there's a glass, and behind that is the screen.
But on the iPhone 4/4S. It looks like the screen is popping out kind of. Makes the user experience that much better IMO.07-26-12 12:25 AMLike 0 - I don't think iPhone's screen is Gorilla glass. I always thought it was. But recently two people have told me it's not.

"All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass — the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable."
Corning Gorilla Glass is the brand name of a type of aluminosilicate glass.
History of Gorilla Glass in smartphones from Wikipedia:
"Corning experimented with chemically strengthened glass in 1960, as part of an initiative called "Project Muscle". Within a few years it had developed what it named "Chemcor" glass. Corning could find no practical use for the glass at the time and the predecessor of "Gorilla Glass" was never put into mass production, excepting its use in approximately one hundred 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda race cars, where the reduced weight was key.[5]
In 2006, Apple Inc. was developing what was to be the first model of the iPhone. Though initially it was to have a hard plastic screen, Steve Jobs found that when placed in his pocket his keys scratched the prototype's surface. Jobs was outraged and resolved to find a glass that was scratch-resistant enough that iPhone buyers would not have the same problem.[6][7]
Jobs ended up contacting the CEO of Corning, Wendell Weeks, and told him that Apple needed a light yet strong enough glass screen for use in their consumer devices. Weeks told him of the "gorilla glass" that the company had developed in the 1960s but had since been mothballed. Jobs convinced Weeks to immediately put the glass into production for use in the upcoming iPhone. Despite initial skepticism on Weeks' part that Corning could do so and also be able to manufacture enough screens in time for the iPhone's pending release, they did in fact achieve these aims within six months. Corning's Harrodsburg, Kentucky factory was able to supply enough "gorilla glass" screens for Apple's iPhone release in June 2007.[5]
Thereafter, Corning's revived Gorilla Glass project started to develop this tough cover glass for a range of smartphones and other consumer electronics devices for several companies.[8][9] Gorilla Glass is used for devices such as smartphones, tablet and notebook computers, and TVs."Last edited by Roo Zilla; 07-26-12 at 12:37 AM.

- Well many Android ces are using Gorilla glas too, same for all Nokia Symbian and Windows screens with glas. So Gorilla Glas by far ain't an Apple stand alone thing.
In my opinion, while I don't want to say it is bad, Gorilla Glas is overrated. Sure it is more scratch resistent than a usual glas screen, it can still be quite easily scratched. There are some videos out there showing this. A simple grain of sand in you holster or pocket can cause scratches on you Gorilla display.
What I want to say: A traditional glas screen plus decent screen protector is better than a Gorilla Glas display without a screen protector.
My company supplied phone is a Nokia with GG. I asked about a screenprotector since we got an el-cheapo silicone case supplied with it. They told me this phone has special scratch resistent glas so I don't need one. After almost half a year you can already see a number of microscratches and a more visible one.07-26-12 02:02 AMLike 0 - Superfly_FRRetired Moderatorwould I insert here that the dev alpha screen resolution is something like 30dpi+ than the retina's ? (and I don't have the feeling of a "behind the glass" screen either)
sry, couldn't resit.07-26-12 04:40 AMLike 0
