Google just unveiled their "L" release of Android, which launches this fall. One of the small pieces of information that was mentioned in the keynote was that the "L" release ditches the Dalvik VM which BlackBerry emulates to run Android apps on BB10 and runs exclusively on a google proprietary ART runtime going forward. Can anyone familiar with the lower echelons of SW comment on the impact this will have on BB10's android player? especially now that BlackBerry has doubled down on their Android investment.

I was just going to write something similar!

I'm also curious what's going to happen now with the L release in the near horizon. At the BB10.3 developer conference, they mention the OS will also work with android wearables like fitbit but with the new L update for android, what happens now? Is it only limited to those devices or will we be able to pick up a moto360 for example.

Very curious to see how BB will react regarding the new runtime change at google.

Davlik compatibility will be ongoing as so many Android devices will never get the 'L' update to their phones. It could mean that after 10.3 BB will wait to update the runtime from Jellybean (Davlik) to 'L' (ART) and skip KitKat.

The OS is still pretty fragmented between the devices. Several are still running older OSs. So a lot of "official" android devices could experience the same issue.

As long as older Android version are so extensively used, apps will have to keep supporting them (or risk losing userbase). So as long as that remains true, the Android Runtime on BB10 will keep working (with 4.3 versions of apps).
Might mean some ART specific features will not be there, but the same would go for any Android devices not compatible with "L".

    BlackBerry 10 signed.

Google is going to run its apps through Android Auto which means that QNX is going to have to be compatible. People have asked, why would Google agree to work with BlackBerry? The answer is that they want there apps to work on top of the QNX system through Android auto.

Google doesn't "have to work with BB", and neither does Apple with Car Play. Instead, both released a set of (similar) specifications for car OS providers to allow their apps (Android Auto and Car Play) to hook into the OS, much like a hardware manufacturer will provide a set of drivers for their hardware for the OS. The car manufacturers pushed for this, and were the ones working with Google and Apple, and anyone wanting to keep their car OS license had to step up and accommodate it or be replaced. Both Microsoft and QNX support both applications, and so can car OSs based on Linux or BSD.

None of it has anything to do with phones, or access to Google Play services. Android Auto and Car Play are really just "extended screens and input devices" for the phone's OS - the apps themselves run on the phone, so there's no real integration between the phone's apps and the car's OS.
