The vw was ugly (opinion) because it was designed with the absolute basics. And was designed to be cheap. The name says it all. It's like offering a car today for under $1000. The passport was designed for productively it's a niche phone not meant for everyone. Total opposites

Np.. you're right it is a hack job.

Hey vw had a cheap car that got the job done. They marketed it as ugly and it was a success story. BB passport is not a cheap phone or cheap build but it does get the job done but people love to bash the surface layers instead of taking it seriously.

The vw ad has nothing to do with how ugly the car is and if you think it is you missed the point. It's about getting the purple elephant out of way so people can stop talking about the purple elephant and start actually looking at what the car offers.

This is no different with the passport. Is it ugly? That's not the point but let's just get that out of the way so we can actually see what the phone is. BB tried it with the "hip to be square" approach but I think they should have pulled a vw and just flat out called it ugly.

I never thought the Passport is ugly. The first time I saw it, I thought it was unique and beautiful. This marketing idea would not work. The only reason why the Passport isn't well known is because it isn't marketed and nobody knows about the phone. When I show it to my friends for the first time, they would say wow, what an interesting looking phone, it looks big and good looking. The reactions is always positive for me.

On topic, whether the Passport is beautiful, a looker or downright ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, agreed, OP, the real beauty is inside when you start using the blessed thing...

But, on the other hand, advertising campaigns like these must be tested thoroughly before releasing and applying in the wild, something like that could easily backfire, ... trolls always find a way!!
(or it could just be ineffective, a waste of advertising dollars!)
