Hey friends!
The new, official name for BBX is OS 10.
But what about OS 8.xx and OS 9.xx??
Any thoughts or ideas?
Is there more to come between OS 7.1 and 10?
Best wishes,
Slash

no, nothing will come in between.
BB10 was chosen because BBX was not available, and they were trying to blend QNX with BB. so converting X as the roman numeral 10, BB10 is born.
we will probably see 7.1 as an evolution of supported 7.0 devices.
I posted this in another thread but ...
10 in base-8 (octal) is 8.
So, if we assume the numbering scheme was in octal the whole time, 10 is just the next number available. OS5, OS6, OS7, OS10 -- then OS11, 12 ... 17, 20, 21
Octal was pretty common in the early days of computers, before hexadecimal really took-off. It's the most convenient notation to use on the Kenbak-1, for example.
I just wish 7.1 had more changes than just mobile hotspot and wifi calling. Would've been nice if they made an even nicer, slicker UI and worked on the browser to make it even faster and better.
RIM isn't going to kill OS 7 anytime soon. They will continue support for years after BB 10 is released. Even OS 5 is still getting updates. There might not be many new features added though.
Dude you're way over my head. Glad you smart guys hang around here. :)
I like stuff.
Oh, hey look, a shiny coin...
I dont know if everyone realizes the obvious....
OS8 and OS9 are future upgrades for current OS7 phones.
I mean they cant and wont abandon their old handsets users as im sure
about every 1 out of 10 will stick with the old
Blackberry form factor. Heck some might even come back
from BB10 to their old 99XX.
plus the old handsets will still be selling for years to come
mainly in 3rd world countries.
I totally get what you are saying.
Just needed a few beers in me. ....
Seven, ate nine.
They abandoned those of us on OS 6 phones...
It's cool to see that OS 10 makes it's slow way to Blackberry handsets.
With OS7 I'm also really happy.
Until now, I don't see a real need to change to OS10.
OS7 is great it does all I want my bb to do!
The only big thing I was missing on prev. version was a good HTML5 browser.
But now it's in.
What's so much better in QNX?
The "old", known plattform is great and it works already highperfomance with little battery usage!
Very efficient!
I wish there would be OS8 and OS9!
Rim is not killing BBOS, it will continue on as lower end devices and QNX will be high end.
Sure, but it's running out.
Like OS 5.0 - it's still supported, but imo OS 7.0 will run out as QNX is standard. Maybe not in 2012 but in 2013 for sure!
I don't care about the OS name or its internal architecture. What I want is the same usability and experience of a BB. I hope they incorporate things like shortcuts etc on OS 10 or BBX or whatever its new name is now.
Just like you want Bold but can't fish out money, you can get the 9700. Just like if you don't have enough money to dish out a BB10 device then you can get the 9900!
My humble opinion:
RIM is actually moving faster than its customers would like. Its core business - the enterprise - is slow-moving in adopting new technologies. There are companies out there which are still deploying OS 4.5/4.6 devices and RIM/developers are hamstrung by them. It'll stir up a scale 10 sh*tstorm if RIM were to drop support for them out of the blue.
It's not like RIM doesn't want to make a faster transition to BB10. I get the vibe that most developers are keen on moving to the new developing environments RIM has been building, but even they are constrained by their clients' reluctance to move up. The truth is RIM has done a lot to make developing for BB much easier than it was. WebWorks is the way to go for most developers; which is supported by OS 5.0 and beyond. It is cheaper and less time-consuming to develop with WW frameworks as it's cross platform, shortens development time considerably (simulator even runs in a browser!), and opportunities are opened to web developers.
they actually havent. They are still putting out OS's for them.....
Every single BBOS is still supported, they never stopped supporting any of them. I bought a 7230 from ebay and I was still able to upgrade the OS.
But, at least so far, they are just little tweaks of the same OS 6.0.0.xxxx. It seems that we won't get anything beyond that - even just giving us the customizable homescreen panels would be worth a bump to 6.0.5.xxxx. If they did that, I'd be set until my contract runs out next Dec.
