I must admit, I use mine in church to read the bible and other sacred text (thank heavens for Mobipocket), but I usually turn the radio off unless my wife is away. Is this tactless?

Tactless, no. But a bit silly.
Just leave the phone and take a regular bound bible.
What is a bible so heavy you can't carry it.
I'm glad Christ didn't think that way when looking
at the cross, and just go "Naw, I ain't carrying
that thing two feet. Get me something smaller
or y'all b itches are on your own"

The BlackBerry is almost the ultimate tool of narcissists. So it never ceases to amaze me that we behave oddly or badly in any situation. Myself included.
I don't go to church *sorry* all that often so I can't speak to the etiquette there.
I text/BBM while working out. Is that wrong? I'm usually on the elliptical/treadmill when doing so. I'm putting my time in and keeping up with my friends. I may even doing my shopping list during that time. I don't TALK during workouts because--I don't want the world knowing my business. Besides, most everyone at the club has an ipod/iphone/bb/mp3 earpieces stuck in their ears. I doubt my tapping away on my bb is bugging them one bit.
I think the most innappropriate thing to do is answer your f'n phone when you are in a conversation face to face with someone. Nothing ticks me off more is when I'm with someone and they answer the phone and when the person on the other end says "what are you doing" and they answer "nothing, whats up?"----that is when I walk away!!!!
Everyone has their opinion on what they think is proper. I'm not here to fight anyone's opinion one way or the other. But at the end of the day, what I do with my BB is my own business; including when I use it.
Some of the comments made throughout this thread basically say anyone that uses a phone period in church is wrong. I'm just glad that the higher power I answer to isnt sitting on these forums.

i agree with you lets say a doctor is in church and he is the only one in the area that can do a special kind of surgery for a auto accident victim i think my post speaks for it self i would want that doctor to help me or my family.

Aside from the extreme hypothetical, you are putting far too much
faith in man.
If God has decided it's that person time, then it's that persons
time, and an army of BB clutching specialists ain't gonna change
that. If God has decided they should go on, the presence of
those same specialist simply won't matter.
its between you and god
if you really need to use it, go outside and chat whenever necessary
im not living your life and shouldnt say anything about it...
