i have a 9900 right now and seriously considering the Q10 for upgrade. i spent two hours in the store and tested both the Q10 and Z10. when i went the Detroit Free Press website, both phones displayed the newspaper in desktop computer mode and not in mobile mode as my 9900 does now. i couldn't read the articles on either BB 10 device, because the font was too small and the Reader function didn't work. does anyone know of a fix to this problem ?

Yep, request the Detroit Free Press website to add BB10 to their useragents. Basically what's happening is that BB10 is not getting recognized on the website thus making it default to desktop.

That or someone forgot to take off desktop mode.

EDIT: You can access the mobile site through here http://m.freep.com/
EDIT 2: The mobile site on my Z10 looks a bit small as well but reader mode works well with selected articles.
