For some reason when I back up my BB to a "back up file" I can't open it on my computer. What am I doing wrong? Can't I just backup my BM on the DM program?

Thanks in advance for the help, I'm kind of a computer ******...

You won't be able to read the content of the backup file by trying to open it on your pc. If it is creating a backup file then it is working. The file is there so that you can use it to restore data to your bb.

The .ipd file created by DM when doing the backup is ONLY readable by DM.
Opening it any other way (to view contents) will just return jibberish.

If you want to see what's being backed up, ABC Amber BlackBerry Convertor will open an IPD and extract data in a variety of formats. They have a free trial if you're just curious and don't want to buy the app.
