He must be a NEW IT guy because and good IT guy and find a way to get the problem solved. BB may not work with all servers but there is a way to make it work for you.

Yeah, they all need to switch to Linux anyways. I would LOVE to sit this guy down in front of a Linux server, or desktop for that matter, and watch what he does! lol

The memory footprint is huge, and that's not a good thing! And it's still having compatibility issues with things.

i know, but finding drivers that work with xp for my laptop, and reinstalling all my apps, is a bigger pain than dealing with Vista's flaws. As for the memory footprint, the only things i have running at startup is AVG and MS Sync Center(Which I can't get rid of), and i have 2gb of memory. i haven't had any real problems yet. Compatibility improved slightly with SP1, some apps (such as Diablo 2) all i have to do is disable Desktop Composition.

First of all, as an "IT Professional" you certainly know how to use (or mis-use, rather) and abuse the COMMA...if your objective was an elipse, it's "..." NOT ",,," !! How annoying.
Second, for anyone to say that BB software is difficult to use is a misstatement. Compared to what?

I rarely post to such forums as an IT Professional,,I have little time for such things. However, after installing many Blackberry instances for clients with Windows server,,,I have a recommendation -- Dont do it.
If you have a situation where your client is contemplating buying a Blackberry with plans to marry with their Exchange server,,,it would be wise to share with the client the troubling issues with the Blackberry software.
1. The Blackberry software is a convoluted mess and lengthy process to install.
Of course, if you client is willing to pay you for the time to install/troubleshoot to get working,,,then,,hey,,what the heck.
2. Blackberry support...in short sucks. They are very difficult to contact and when u do get a tech that knows what they are doing,,,u may have trouble understanding their English.
3. Have had several clients where the software just simply quits communicating with the handset and requires attn to get going again.

Again,,,if one has the choice,,,avoid Blackberry. Recommend your client buy a handset that readily marries with Exchange Server without addl. software involved...there are plenty to choose from and they perform very well.

I will not visit this post in the future,,,as I have no time for it..but wanted to aire my experienced opinion so that those investigating Blackberry as a solution can think twice prior to deployment.

Dude, that is why they called you to install it. If it was easy, and every joe blow could do it, they will do it themselves. There is no need to hire "IT professional" like you to do for them.

Also regarding the Tech support, r u sure you are not calling the Indian government hotline?

Not sounding to be harsh, but before you called your self "Professional" have you double-, triple-, quadruple-checked your credentials/ experiences?

I was thinking," WTF? R u trying to steal my identity or what?" I don't know you from Adam (and Eve), and you want me to tell you about my financial history?

after more questionings, he finally "confessed" me that he just got his license a few months back ( 6 or 7 months ago).
and he actually said" you look and sound very intelligent" and then the mofo proceed with how much money I could be making and actually offering me a " business opportunity".
I was" WTF?" so I just told him to get lost..

LOL. have had the same problems. (PPL not asking and the low memory!) Vista runs "OKAY" with 2 GB. If you wanna run it with NO lag problems, it would be best to get 4 GB.

I refer to the original post by ktell. While I disagree with the tone and manner of the posting, I do have a degree of empathy.

As SysAd, I was asked to install BES on our company's SBS 2003 server. I am not a I.T. 'professional', but nevertheless consider myself to be at least competent in installing and maintaining most network client and server software. I am forced to admit that the Blackberry BES installation proved to be the most complex I have ever undertaken. It's still incomplete at this point incidentally, (but nearly there).

Words of advice to anyone commited to a Blackberry installation:

1. Pay whatever you need to for an an experienced specialist installer to do the job.

2. Allow a day for installation, and expect two or three server reboots.

3. Ensure plenty of free disk space.

4. Allow for purchasing more server RAM

5. Don't try to install to a server more than about 2 years old.

6. Ensure there's no pre-existing server or network issues.

7. Don't let the installer leave until EVERYTHING is working and the network SysAdmin has been briefed

8. Don't buy Blackberry (only kidding, honest)

Unlike the original poster, I do intend to return here, so please try to be kind to me. I'll probably be back to find answers to configuration and maintenance issues.

Okay???? Why i didn't read through this whole thread i must say that i am a IT professional and we are running a BES server here with zero problems. Not sure what he is doing wrong but we currently have about 60 users. its connected to 2003 exchange server.

On another note we also have a goodlink server that has about 30-40 users on it that all of our employees who use there palm devices. Now we do not recommend they go out and get a palm and use goodlink. We try to encourage them to use BB as they are easier to maintain and use.

Sounds like this guy just had a bad experience or didn't understand how to install it....oh well
