How is a blackberry useless? It makes call, organizes my inbox, plays my music, I can search the web, take pictures, find my way home and forecast the weather for me.

Maybe you're not utilizing the capabilities of your phone or at least not attempting to learn about your phone. Judging from the context of your post it seems like you want an iPhone in place of a blackberry for work.

If your work is giving you a blackberry then maybe you should consider being productive by utilizing the features of the phone instead of sighing why they wouldn't give you an iPhone. Have you considered they don't want you to be playing games all day on the job.

Certainly not, just stating the obvious. I have two views

    1) Given the choice between holding a piece of plastic and a warm body, I'll
take the warm body no doubt.

    2) I truly think one of the reasons people have the difficulty sleeping well has a great
deal to do with all the distracting crap they allow in their bedrooms. Be it cell
    phones, TVs, workout equipment, etc...

2 years as a BB user and over 10 years as a cellphone user and in all that time
at no point has my devices made it to my bedroom (even if I am awake.)
There is also no TV, game console, DVR, etc... If i need that stuff, I
need to get up. Surprisingly, I sleep extremely well.
I do agree with the fact that some people may not sleep well enough because of distractions but there are also people like me who need it to sleep. Its very sad to say but I need to watch a tv show or the news to fall asleep. Sometimes I will read a chapter in a book or surf crackberry in bed on my BB but if I have silence and darkness than I just roll around for hours and my mind races. But if I turn on CNN or watch an episode of a favorite show Ill pass out so fast. I put my TV on a sleep timer also.

Watching Star Trek: TNG makes me fall asleep the fastest, something to do with Stewarts voice

I work 3rd shift, and for those occasional insomnia days.... Melatonin is my best friend.

    Accurate? Really?

You HAVE to go to bed but to do so you need all kinds of gadgets to assist with
that? If you HAVE to go to bed your BB, laptop, TV, etc... should be irrelevant.

I will never understand the person who would rather play with their phone
while they a have person of the opposite gender in their bed.

And seriously... "get r done?" I thought that phrase played out 2 years ago.
Struck a nerv I guess? Never said I play with my phone instead of the wife. But on an occassion I may read or surf the web on my BB if she is a sleep....I've never had an issue with my relatioship or my sleep because of a device. Where's your sense of humor?

I've used my bb as a phone, and for email, im's, as an mp3 player, to watch movies on the plane, as a GPS while driving, to connect up to the local police scanner to hear the status as I hurry to my son's car accident, listen to good tunes with Pandora, keep fuel records for my vehicles, review the brief for the meeting while on the subway, ... I could keep going, but the point I want to make is that for me its a phone first. There are other devices that may do some of those other secondary functions better but I'm already going to have the phone with me and having the smartphone means I don't have to carry all those other things around all the time. This goes for any smartphone, not just bb's.

Oh, I also use it to check crackberry from really strange places

Luckily my BB is provided by my employer, but I would have no idea what the appeal would be to average joe citizen. Does anyone browse the internet on a consistant basis on a 2" screen? I'm sure everyone will say, "all the time"....umm really? When I'm at work I use my computer, when I'm at home....my laptop. My question is....why is everyone so excited about this new browser when it'll still be on a microscopic screen? Yeah yeah I know....the Storm 2......but most employers don't issue that model.
Based on your logic, BlackBerry's in general, and all smartphones for that matter, are useless. All of them have small screens that can't compare to a full sized monitor. My question is, aren't you checking email on the same small screen? Isn't that equally frustrating?

I do use my BlackBerry to surf the net regularly. In fact, I'm responding to this post from my Storm2 (which I LOVE, by the way).

I will admit that surfing the web on a device with a 2 x 4" screen isn't as enjoyable as using my 22" high def LCD monitor, but I fully accept the trade off between the mobility and accessibility of my BlackBerry to the screen size of desktop & laptop computers. While on my BB, I tend to avoid full HTML websites and opt for the much faster to load and easier to navigate mobile sites. You'd be surprised how many there are. Here are some of my favorites:

Try some of these sites, and I'm sure your mobile browsing experience will be much less frustrating. If not, perhaps mobile browsing simply isn't for you. My dad doesn't like it either, but I do understand that as he's retired...

I know i have been a BB user for a couple years now and have strayed numerous times only to come back the BB because of its efficiency. I can ge more done in a smaller amount of time because the BB is so efficient with emails, texts, phone calls, logging things, etc. Sounds like the BB just isnt the best toy for you (but keep in mind the BB is not a toy). Some people want an efficient phone and some want an something else.

I'm also done with BlackBerry. Developers simply can't or don't want to make any useful apps for BlackBerrys and RIM hardware is a joke so I'm probably going for an Dell Mini 5 when it comes out. That's going to be a crazy upgrade from the BlackBerry Bold.

It could be worse. I spent 2 years surfing the web on my moto razr v3. Opera made it better but reading digg on it sucked. So much better with my BB now. Though I had a G1 when they came out and enjoyed it but it wasn't enough to impress me.

My next phone is Gen 4 iPhone. The Storm will get me through to the replacement.

Sorry RIM - you have had a few years now to do something with the OS and Browser, and all you do is release 35 'different' phones (the same phones with minor differences and names. OOOOO.) It kills me because I want to support a Canadian company but RIM is pulling a Palm from 4 years ago.

+1. I live by my calendar. My work schedule is in my calendar. Because I work 12hr swing-shift, I can always look months into the year and see if I'm working a particular day.

My bb helps with my duties as a ground team leader in Civil Air Patrol as well. If our Wing is activated for a mission, I know about it then vs. having to wait until I can check e-mail on a computer or listen to the answering machine hours later.

Absolutely agree with you on the reliability of instant notification. BB revolutionised the way teams that need to move at an instant's notice are activated. You cannot wait to be near a computer - notifications come with reporting instructions and you cannot get that on the old pagers or on the dumb phones. For teams that need to move at the drop of a hat, BB is a godsend. Aside from the occasional sat phones, berries are what you see now on deployments.

I think what the OP means, and I 100% agree - is that browsing the internet on a regular basis and living and dying via your blackberry is pathetic. I have a BB - and a lot of apps. I use them when I need them - but I sure as **** wouldn't rely on my BB (or an iphone for that matter) for anything super important. People are forgetting what the main purpose of cell/smart phones SHOULD be - to be used in a pinch (super important work related email) or to make an emergency phone call. Otherwise...put the phone down and do something with yourself - you know - talk to PEOPLE, make friends, pry yourself away from the screen.

I laugh at how pathetic people are when they talk about how they can't live without their blackberry (or cell phone)...grow up and develop FACE TO FACE relationships

Very well said bro. I can't understand how people get so involved in their phones. The spend half the arguing and defending their devices. I use mt BB for emails and calls and very minor web browsing. Don't get me wrong I love cells but I prefer a laptop for browsing and real face to face conversation instead of IM's and calls. Some people run around here defending their devices like the own the company and then you have the others that complain about every single the device does. I really don't get these people..... Do they think they own the company?

I agree, ive used Palm OS, WM, BB, and now iphone as they all work fine its just preference.

But people sit here and defend their device to the death like their lives depend on it and they own the company with a huge financial stake in what others think of it.

In the end any smartphone will get you calls and email and browse the web when you need to use it. These petty fights get old just like calling an iphone a toy and what not. It works for some people so who cares? BBs work for some people, WM works for some, Android, etc.

If it works for them why do you care what they use so desperately?

I definitely dont spend all day on my phone. I make minimal calls- maybe 10 min, minimal browsing, maybe 5 min, dont really text, use some apps sometimes and thats about it. I dont need my head buried in a phone all day and miss out on life and real connections with people. I just prefer the iphone personally because it has apps I need like legal apps for work. Other than that its just a phone.

I use the browser on my Blackberry all the time. I go on about 10 different websites per day on it. I spend a lot of time whether at school, at work, on my lunch break, on the train, on the subway, on the bus... So I don't think it's quite fair to say that no one uses the browser on the BB, at least I do!
