Apple, Google Continue U.S. Rise at RIMs Expense, Says Nielsen

    By Tiernan Ray

Nielsens survey of smartphone owners in the U.S., out this morning, shows an increase in market share for both Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) among software platforms in use on phones, mostly at the expense of Research in Motion (RIMM), and also projects a surge in new buying among Apples customer base.

The survey was conducted with 25,000 adults in the U.S. each month who responded to Nielsens request for panel participants, aged 18 and older. I believe the responses were filed online, though I have a request in to Nielsen to verify that.

The survey of U.S. consumers in December projects 46% of U.S. mobile subscribers used smartphones (as opposed to feature phones, etc.), up from 43% in a similar survey released back in early November.

Out of all existing smartphone users surveyed, 30% were using phones running Apples iOS operating system, second behind Googles Android at 46.3%. Those figures are up from 28% and 43% in the prior survey.

Research in Motions share dropped from 18% in the prior survey to 14.9%. Microsofts (MSFT) Windows Mobile (not Windows Phone 7) slipped from 7% of the market to just 4.6%, while Windows Phone 7 had 1.3%, according to Nielsen.

By comparison, the latest survey conducted by comScore, through November, showed Google having had 46.9% of all smartphone subscriber usage, and Apple with 28.7%.

Nielsen points out that among those who said they bought a new phone in the last three months, the survey found 44.5% bought an iPhone, which was up from just 25.1% in the October survey. Most of those Apple buyers 57% bought an iPhone 4S.

The last data point would seem to reinforce the sense among some analysts for several weeks now that Apple saw very strong iPhone sales last quarter.
