    BlackBerry's QNX Loses Mercedes

It seems as if BlackBerry’s bet to focus on in-car systems may not really pay off longer term.

It's a SeekingAlpha article. So it's a spin by someone either looking for clicks to get paid, or to move the stock price. It MIGHT ha e actual business relevance, but that would be the exception when it comes to SA.

The implication that losing the infotainment software contract with Mercedes has meaningful implications for the business is in no way supported. It's never good to lose a customer, but it doesn't mean the sky is falling.

Generalizing from an instance is poor logic.

They still are providing the service to other manufacturers that sell many more cars than Mercedes. While not a positive thing to lose a customer, it isn't a "nail" nor is there a "coffin." If there still is a coffin, they certainly have risen from the dead given their last several quarters.

    What other nail is there?

Huge Auto and Radar announcements, 3000 Enterprise orders in the last quarter, record software&services revenue - and growing (and mostly recurring), $2.5 billion cash, clear of the hardware boat anchor, earnings positive in several consecutive quarters, chosen as one of the growth stocks to watch in 2018, 80% increase in stock price in the last 12 months.....

Holy smokes, what else do you want?!

$150 seriously, if you want it to move with all the competition, it can't be more than $99 with otterbox case or lifeproof case included.

While I cannot vouch for the veracity of the article, the point is not about losing a single deal with Mercedes, of course. The article’s point is rather more general than that and in particular focused on the longer term. Time will tell I guess.

While losing Mercedes sucks, picking up Ford a couple of years ago, who sell 5 or 10 times as many cars, more than makes up for it.

But BB is working on self-driving cars, and their piece of the revenue pie for those would be orders of magnitude higher than for mere infotainment systems, just as infotainment is an order of magnitude more than low-level engine control done by QNX. That only gets them like $1.50 per car, while infotainment is something like $14-17 per car, and self-driving car stuff is projected to be $150-200 per car (for software only).

On the Tier 1S side of the coin, you'd think a company that partners with Apple, Google, Intel, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, NVIDIA, et al to be pretty successful, but this is BlackBerry after-all so of course things must be going down the toilet!

By definition, the median IQ is 100, so half the people you meet in your life have an IQ under 100.

120 isn’t bad. It’s like two standard deviations above the mean, right?

QNX infotainment system was in the lead last year (50% market share?). With defection shifted to alternatives is a serious concern. However, QNX do have advantage of real time, security on its side compare to the other open source system, although it might be dimminishing if 5G implemented. I am not surprise Germany and Japan seek for alternatives. BB better showcase some superiority for the future connectivity and next gen integration... The good thing is auto market overall is increasing (100 million cars for this year compare to 92 million 2017), BB still got time to lead the game... I wouldn't say it is a nail in the coffin, but a wake up call to middle of the night for Chen. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/technology/tech-news/blackberry-announces-updated-software-platform-for-vehicle-security/article35230816/%2Breview+blackberry+infotainment+system&client=sa fari&rls=en&dcr=0&tbs=qdr:y&hl=en&ct=clnk]BlackBerry on a familiar road as it fends off QNX software rivals - The Globe and Mail[/url]

Over the years when BlackBerry stock soars on positive news, you can always count on a flurry of negative " analysis" and bad news to be released.

I was thinking the same thing about Crackberry. Haven't been here in awhile, surprised it's still around...

Since the CRTC said all smartphones have to be sold unlocked in Canada as of Dec 1, 2017, why is this news? TCL is losing money on these devices, no one wants these devices, it's unfortunate. Sad. But true...

Demand for the KEYᵒⁿᵉ was double expectation, requiring TCL to boost production.

As a result, they introduced two subsequent variations (Black and Bronze), and have announced two more pkb devices for 2018.

Demand can be measured many ways...I would love to know the hard actual number of TCL BlackBerry phones sold...
