If one wanted a tablet why not. New OS runs lean and entertainment wise it will do anything any of the others do for a fraction of the cost. Amazon just threw down the gauntlet in regards to tablets. It's very similar to the mid price/tier phones that do everything another does albeit marginally slower. * See Motorola Moto G with 2GB of Ram and a micro SD slot for 220. New Amazon offerings have 128 GB micro SD slot plus Amazon cloud storage. Let's see now how many of the real expensive tablets move.

It actually reminds me of the Playbook.
Seems to have the same screen as the Playbook.
I used the playbook for some reading ( until I got a Kindle PaperWhite).
That's a great price for just having it for a little reading of PDFs with illustrations since it has an SD card slot. Expandable memory is always a plus
It has "budget" low spec written all over it. It's a great buy if you are realistic about getting what you pay for.
Can't beat the price.

They even have a six pack for the price of 5. You get six tablets for the price of 1 ipad mini.

Think about the benefits for schools and educational purposes at VERY reasonable prices. Huge plus for Amazon. I suspect Google will follow suit. They already are great with schools and chrome books. Because they will run all the educational apps and programs.

Except it's much thinner and a hell of a lot lighter.
Runs Fire OS so no thanks
Am looking for a cheap Android tablet to power my home media setup
Was hoping this would be it, but the search continues lol
You can side load google play store just like any other kindle fire. Remember it is android with a skin.

I find the "buy 5 get 1 free" offer amusing. Definitely turns a few heads how disposable technology has become.
Fire OS is a fork not a skin.

I might get the 7in Kindle Fire for my MIL. Her Acer tablet died and I don't want to fork more $$$ on a replacement.

Heavily subsidised? Or can they really manufacture that cheap now with lower spec components?
:-)
 Leakers' gonna leak... :-)
Dang, couldn't find it on the Canadian Amazon site. American only. Plus you can buy 5 and get the sixth one free.

The specs of the new Amazon tablets are not really attractive to me.
I am still interested in the 8,9 HDX tablet to watch movies and read books, however, I have the impression Amazon could be tracking me even more than Google.
Although I know it sounds ridiculous, but I am still holding money back for a PlayBook 2.
Amazon Instant Video works on my PlaBook by the way.
Hi, all you tablet experts out there, I am looking to purchase a cheap tablet to use on planes to watch movies etc, ie United were you download their app would the new Amazon tablet work, tks

Mine works very well. However the cheapest one is only 8 gb so keep that in mind.

It has sdcard slot, so $20US gets you a class 10 32gig card on the same page on Amazon.

Do tell how you got that working.

Plain simple:
Flash, Javascript and Cookies are enabled in the browser of my PlayBook.
The I just browse the Amazon website and log into my account.
From there I can play videos.
From a security point of view, the above procedure is not recommandable, because old versions of Flash and enabled Javascript are introducing vulnerabilities into a browser, which itself is also no longer supported for almost 3 years.
However, for various reasons I believe that browsing the Amazon site with a PlayBook OS is a relatively little risk.
Got mine 2 days ago.
Great tablet for the price.
But in Europe it's 59 euro and even 75 euro without ads.
Just add another 25+30 euro for a micro-B to HDMI adapter (if Amazon confirms in the end you can tether it to a HDTV because they are very vague.. and they made the Fire Tablet unable to access the mirroring option! That's avery cheap move imho)
In conclusion you're better with the Fire HD version if you intend to use it on a bigger screen, 99$ and with mirroring option.

Most everyone I knew that bought a Kindle Fire back when it first came out.... have moved on to an iPad or a "real" Android Tablet.
Not saying that for $50 you could go wrong.... just that the Kindle ecosystem is not what some people expect.
that's may be true for some and not for others...
I bought it for an older person that isn't very good at technology and was amazed at how Amazon let you install what you want on it.
I put Google playstore with its services and even Kodi (that runs very very well...in fact that person just loves the option to use kodi on it )
I find the Bellini OS very fluid and easy to manage too, a lot easier than any android i ever tried.
But it certainly is more limited than an Android, it depends on the target, for his purpose it's just a good match ;)
Thanks! Amazon video works beautifully on my 32GB PlayBook! Charged it up and watched a movie yesterday. Thanks for the Fyi. Super cool!!!!
