I feel like I am, which makes me think I must be missing something. Considering I have zero friends using BBM, what am I missing out on by just using SMS/MMS and no apps?

It's only worth using a chat app if you do a substantial amount of conversing with certain people on a consistent basis. The one friend I do that with I strong-armed into using BBM. It's faster, more immersive and responsive, easier to trade attachments of various sorts...but again, we do a ton of chatting. For everyone else it's just occasional texts.

As for BBM in particular, I don't know a single other human being with a BlackBerry, so if it weren't for the one friend who I force to use it, BBM would cease to exist in my world. It would be either GTalk or Whatsapp. Not a huge deal, but I do prefer BBM for whatever reason.

I feel like I text a lot. I never really paid attention but I looked at my last bill and it was 12,000+ texts! Crazy. I text way more than I talk. I feel like I have a few friends I could talk into using BBM, if it's really worth it.

I only use BBM as a communication app, I have to text everyone else. Lucky for me the people that I communicate the most with are on BBM and have BlackBerry devices. I do wish more would jump in....maybe some day.

These days I use it often just to see bbm channels.

I barely talk too, I hate phone calls for non-urgent matters and the idea of interrupting someone's day on my schedule (vrs. Giving them the flexibility to decide to respond to my bbm when they can).

But to answer your question... Yes, it is worth pushing them onto BBM (unless they resist because the name includes BlackBerry). Richer experience, implicit sense of presence, and probably runs better than the sms "app" on your Q10.

Don't forget, not all of us have unlimited SMS. I've managed to convince the friends and family that contact me the most to use BBM so I don't go over my monthly allotment. Whatsapp is not an option because I'm not comfortable up-loading my contact list to their servers.

    Make that three of us.
BBM's sitting in BlackBerry World waiting to be downloaded, (yet it's still pumping data in and outa my phone according to the task manager).
It WAS very good when I once had the opportunity to use it though - I have to say.

I live in Nigeria and BBM is really a must-have. I haven't sent a text message in months and the only text I receive are bank transaction alerts or dumb adverts from my Network provider. With BBM going cross platform, almost all smartphone users here have bbm and if they say they don't, they probably don't want you on their list.

BBM is part of my whole life now and I can't imagine a day without it. Lol, that's just me though.

You're not even close to being alone globally, but you are asking the question on a "smart phone website". Chances are most responders have and use multiple IM apps on their device. But not everyone outside of CB that purchases a smart phone uses IM apps, and not everyone owns a smart phone. While it may not have the file sharing or voice chat capabilities as IM, for me texting is the fastest, most glitch-free cross platform communication app on my BlackBerry.

A quick Google suggests texting is far from dead.

Everyone I know has unlimited text. If I need to send a file, I just email it on my phone. Only time I use bbm is when someone is overseas. No one really uses bbm, whatsapp, or other messenger services.

    I rarely use IM myself.

I'm a dinosaur who uses email - a lot! - and texts now and again if I can't raise the other person on the phone.

Two main reasons for that. 1) Writing an email gives me time to organise my thoughts and I frequently rearrange text to better communicate my point prior to sending. 2) Email provides its own audit trail - things written can be reviewed at some later date -which is important in my work (and carries across to my personal life).

Basically I'm not a "fire and forget" kind of guy, and IM isn't for me.
