When I have to type a number (often) I have trouble with my LEFT thumb (holding ALT) being in the way of the number, esp 4, 7, 8. It sucks.

Is there some trick I'm missing?

Or else, how about RIM put an ALT key on the RIGHT side as well as LEFT (there are two Shift keys after all).

Press alt+left shift so you can type numbers without holding down the alt key. It's a NUM lock.

I don't have to hold down the alt key at all. I am able to hit alt and then the 4/S or 7/Z. Does your alt not stay on after you press until the next key you press?

Yeah you either click Alt then your desired key, or enable Numlock and use your numbers that way.

The above is useful if typing out a row of numbers.
