Alec Saunders - No Vacation. Fix apps!
- Hey Alec,
Ok, folks think I ask too much. Nice Alaska pics. Now that you are refreshed, it's crunch time. Fourth down late in the fourth quarter. RIM needs the strongest app environment you can provide. Including on PlayBook now that MS is coming.
--Fix Docs To Go so it at least is on par with Android. You own it. fix it! This should be an easy lift.
--Fix the productivity apps like Evernote, Adobe PDF, Browser, so they are more than token apps. They are poor and thin compared to other platforms. At least the basic native apps should be top tier by now, or real soon.
For non-RIM apps, either get the developers on board or find a substitute. If RIM/PB is for doing things, give us top tier apps to do those things! You need to go full court press on these developers.
Everyone at RIM should be focused on making the best damn phone and tablet environment until after BB10 and PB2 are released and adopted. Otherwise, there is no tomorrow.Last edited by Brianflys; 06-26-12 at 02:37 AM. Reason: vacation is over...time to focus

- Thanks for all your passion guys!
FWIW, I was on a cruise with my elderly parents and my wife. My parents bought the ticket for us two years ago as a gift. It was an open ticket that expired in June 2012. I kept postponing until I couldn't postpone any longer -- they would have lost their money if we hadn't gone this month.
And yes, when we were in cell range, the BlackBerry was at hand.
Best, A
This is for you:

06-26-12 01:27 AMLike 7 - dude, calm down..Alex is dev relations guy and not someone who fixes OS issues, it is like asking a dentist to do a heart surgery.
secondly, his vacation is none of our business and everyone need a break once in a while to get off the pressure and think afresh.06-26-12 01:29 AMLike 12 - I will disagree with you. Everyone deserves a vacation, a week or two doesn't change what he helped put in place. When he is on vacation doesn't mean he is not focused on the goal but gives time to think of the strategy.
Enjoy Alec if you are on vacation and when you're back let's get those apps. Thanks.06-26-12 01:29 AMLike 4 - Did contact Alec on Twitter. Nice guy, pleasant response. But off the mark.
Senior management need to lead by example. No vacations till BB10 is out. Stock is getting hammered, sales underperforming, customers either waiting or jumping ship.
Only...only...only solution at hand is BB10, with a strong ecosystem. Everyone at RIM should be focused making their part of BB10 the best it can be. Can they not stay focused for these next few months? Prioritize.06-26-12 01:47 AMLike 2 - I'm sure they prioritize their personal health and families over your particular needs. They're not your slaves. If RIM were to go down, they'll find work elsewhere. Unlike health and family, jobs can be easily replaced. With that said, do you know what his daily routine is like? Do you know if he's working his off every day, or just standing around the water cooler?

06-26-12 01:53 AMLike 6 - Vacation is great. Relaxing and recharging. But RIM needs to focus right now on delivering BB10 as soon as possible and as awesome as possible. Have you never postponed personal plans to accomplish a greater goal? In 3 months, this will all be history, so knuckle down now, and bask in the warm glow of success, after BB10 is released.
Or is this too intense a commitment to ask for in this new era of entitlement?06-26-12 02:12 AMLike 0 - Did contact Alec on Twitter. Nice guy, pleasant response. But off the mark.

Maybe he's taking a break because he knows something we don't...06-26-12 02:27 AMLike 6 - Greater goal? This is about smartphones... They're not curing cancer, fighting a war or feeding hungry children. The world is not going to end if Alec Saunders decides to take a little vacation.

06-26-12 02:59 AMLike 10 - whoa whoa whoa...he's been working non-stop since he came on board. I think its better to have 10 days at 100% than 1000 at 99% energy. let the man gather up some steam and let him get back to what he does best, talking to people. if he's on vacation, he didn't even have to reply to your tweet, but he did!

In 3-4 months, this phase of the company history will be essentially cooked, so this didn't seem like an unreasonable suggestion to all pull together till then. Others (ok, everybody so far) disagree. Different times.
Do we want more? Sure, but let's keep things in perspective; Alec Saunders is one of the best in the business, he's worked hard, and the general consensus from the developer community is that RIM's platform is much better--and the company is much easier to deal with--than ever before.
He's done a fantastic job--as much as anyone could be expected. Cut him some slack.Alex_Hong likes this.06-26-12 04:43 AMLike 1 - I think it's a good sign that he was permitted to go on vacation. Trust me when I tell you that if things were going south, there is no way that his vacation request would have been approved. The simple fact that he is on vacation tells you that all the pieces are in place and that he has done a fantastic job this far.06-26-12 07:35 AMLike 0
- I'm sure Alec is just recharging.. Kind of like the "calm before the storm" now because I can guarantee you, if RIM doesn't manage to get the big name apps on board before BB10 is released.. poor Alec is gonna have to deal with the fallout from the tech media . If you think they were hard before.. Wow.. It's gonna be a LOT worse if they fail again.pantlesspenguin likes this.06-26-12 07:43 AMLike 1

There is an Alec Saunders registered here, only the mods would know if it is truly someone from RIM or not. That being said I agree, tweet him and he generally is extremely responsive.06-26-12 07:52 AMLike 0 - Sith_ApprenticeMod Team EmeritusI'm sure Alec is just recharging.. - Isn't Alec the VP of developer relations?
you should be harping on Dan Dodge he is the guy who is incharge of internal app development he's the big boss man for software
give Alec a break, his job is to fire up developers, to manage the evangelists, to look for opportunities to get apps into the BlackBerry Platform, and help 3rd Party developers feel they are welcome and wanted06-26-12 08:16 AMLike 8 - Exactly. Alec has nothing to do with internal development. His organization is responsible for getting third party developers on board and get them what they need to commit to this platform.
He's been doing a great job of that, when you consider the hand he was dealt.
BTW, not that it's our business, but this is really the ideal time for him to take a vacation. He'll be very busy the rest of this year (we hope)tjseaman likes this.06-26-12 08:43 AMLike 1 - Exactly. He had a 2, 4, 6 , A and piece of cardboard, and he's managing to make it a winning hand06-26-12 08:46 AMLike 3 - sleepngbearRetired Moderator
'Fixing the apps' is not a heads-down singularly executed task. RIM has laid the groundwork with BB10 and developer tools. Alec has done his part to spread the word, and considering that he was still answering tweets, was probably continuing to do so even while 'on vacation'. See, these guys usually don't have the luxury of going totally incommunicato. I have no doubt that he had his BLACKBERRY at his side and was readily available the whole time if needed.06-26-12 08:49 AMLike 0 - Did contact Alec on Twitter. Nice guy, pleasant response.
