I want to know where this source is coming from? Who wrote this because for the past few years Yahoo have been posting these BlackBerry trash talk articles that have no truth and Blackberry have proven to be the opposite of what these articles have written about them.

Another reason why Yahoo continues to lose credibility and seems desperate by posting low grade shock value article to keep the company surviving. Sigh.

I'm almost positive it is leaky Jim Faucette or his underling whose name escapes me at the moment. Leaky Jim moved to Morgan Stanley a while back and has always had a major hate for blackberry. I've noticed he has disappeared the last few months after the indictment proceedings were launched against Detwhiler Fulton. It's also not exactly news that Morgan Stanley is fronting Mobile Iron's IPO. Let's face it a stronger Blackberry weakens Mobile Iron's IPO position and good old Morgan Stanley might be stuck with shares it doesn't want. Just saying..... there is more than one agenda at play.

Acquiring a company to increase revenue is the safest way to grow. Before commenting negatively on a great move, you should follow a few finance classes.

"Great" move. As if anyone can judge its grandeur the day after its announcement.

I think what OP is trying to say, is that it's obvious that BB will only/mostly be a software company, and this acquisition only further proves that.

Software revenue didn't even match John Chen's compensation package last year. Acquisitions are necessary to make targets.

To some people, there are more importnat features than streaming media and social networking. Just because they're important to some people, does not mean they are important to all. With the main functions of things like SnapChat, Vine, SocialCam, etc being the sharing of naked selfies and porn videos, it's not surprising that BlackBerry isn't focused on them
Exactly the reason why I have a Blackberry Passport and a Samsung S6 Edge. The Passport is indispensable and the Samsung is a nice add on.

Seriously, if you're trying to adopt people to your POV, at least try to mix it up with a few positive comments. Otherwise, you're just a joke on the forums.

Your right the Geek, the Chicken Man and about 20 others would make up over half of all the posts on this site. I just wonder who's paying them. I mean someone has to be paying them to keep on posting all that negative dribble.

If they only make phones that I don't want, like PKB devices only and especially the Classic and Passport, then their survival again is useless to me, and useless to most of the existing BB10 base. Maybe the Slider will be satisfactory, but we don't know how fat and or heavy that thing will be, nor do we know when to even expect it.

You now have Virtual SIM, secure voice and now secure documents(last three m&a). How does this not make sense for BlackBerry?

This is what I've always wanted too, high spec devices in limited volumes. But then I realized it might not be worth it, because I think manufacturers get components at a discount the more they order. So cutting edge components for say, 500,000 devices might be pretty costly, and they'd have to sell them at a very high price in order to get revenue from the device sales. I'm just guessing though, I don't really know how it all works.
I think this is pretty much correct. Devices produced in small numbers will have to have a high price tag, unless they use older, discounted components. And if they do that, they won't achieve the "flagship" level specs that many want.

As long as BlackBerry has any phones for sale, Chen has to say to the public that they're still in the hardware business, but when you try to read the tea leaves of all that has been happening with BlackBerry recently, it's not so clear.

Sadly... this week we can see the best evidence yet of where Chen is leading the company. And it is NOT in the direction that most on these forums will care about.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/cautio...124132249.html

The next few quarters may just show the revenue numbers Chen has been predicting... due to acquisitions (gimmicks) rather than any real BlackBerry growth.

Good luck to ya BlackBerry... as a software company. And kuddos to ya Chen, for all the gimmicks (cost cutting, dumping on BB10, acquisitions, twisted accounting... etc.) you used to save the shareholders.

More than at any time in the past dozen years, I now realize my next phone will most likely NOT be a BlackBerry.
No Growth?? Maybe someone should check out the Mobileiron news today, and how they have had to cut revenue expectations due to losing customers.

Please note that Mobile Iron is now under investigation. The CFO has resigned. The stock is down 23%. Talk about twisted accounting. The law firm is stating that the company "misrepresented" itself to investors. A nice PC way to say "lied". At least Chen is realistic about the company he represents. Remember, "...50/50 chance of success." "...80/20 chance of success." I use a Z30 and love it. Would I like to see a new version of that phone?, absolutely. But, I need the company to exist to do that. I can wait.

So........they shouldn't be acquiring companies to continue growing their own? Will the revenues of those acquisitions disappear after year 2 of being acquired? Just looking for some clarity here...
Acquisitions are risky. On one hand, earnings and revenue may double or triple. On the other, come several year's time we may be talking about bankruptcy again. It takes a lot of faith in management.

EDIT: BTW, this acquisition does impact hardware in that it means Blackberry will have less money to invest in the development of BB10 OS.

Acquisitions will add to operating expenses. There may come a time that even if hardware is marginally profitable that a cash strapped BBRY may ask itself, "Where would my money be better invested?"

Acquisitions can be risky without the right hand to execute and build on it properly. I reckon Chen and the team have that hand... :-)

You are right but what if they used the same components in all of their lineup and not just one?
    How would this work?

If you have the same high-end BOM for the whole line-up then you are selling the same device with different names?
In that case the low-end device is likely going to massively outsell the high-end one.

Maybe you have the same high-end SOC in all the devices?
Not sure the math works on this either.

    They were burning money.
A lot of these MDM providers feed on a promise of a golden MDM /BYOD future. It's like the Dot.com bubble (1999?) all over again.

"Investor story time". To make money, you either advertise and sell to users, or to investors. Investors is easier, less ears for more money. "This fantastic new product, MDM is booming, we're all gonna get rich, but first we need some more capital..."

Here's an article about how that works...
