So on AT&T.com it says their 3G can reach speeds of 1.7mbps or 1700kbps... Is this actually true? Or am I doing the kpbs to mbps calculation wrong? The reason I ask is because 1.7mbps is faster than my home broadband which is about 1100 kbps...

The 3G specification states that in theory you could get speeds up to 14Mb/s however there aren't providers with that kind of bandwidth. A 1Mb/s would not be out of the ordinary.

Most communication specifications have a "tested" speed and a "real world" speed. They will probably come up with 4G before we'd super fast speeds of a couple megs but its not impossible now. Just no one can do it in a manner to spread it out to the masses.
