I have experienced over the last five days that when connected to a Shaw Open WiFi Hotspot, the connection to the Blackberry Servers drops. In effect, no BBM messages received nor ability to send. I live in Winnipeg and have notified Shaw with this issue and await their response and action. Anybody else in Canada noticing this? BTW if I switch off my wifi the mobile network automatically picks up the BlackBerry server, as well if I connect to a MTS hotspot.

No problems with my Shaw Open. I use it daily all over town and just finished sending 3 BBM 's about an hour or so ago (also received ok). In Thunder Bay.

Sorry, I can't help with your answer (I'm in Aus), but I've been trying to work out how using a 'hotspot' could benefit me over using just plain old WiFi.

What's the benefit of using a 'hotspot' connection?

Hotspot=free WiFi. Don't need to use your data plan for Internet when you find a Hotspot, that's all.

Well I have been in contact with Shaw and their response is it must either be my phone or Blackberry changed their server protocols! They asked me to remove and reregister my device with Shaw Open which of course did nothing to reestablish connection to the BlackBerry Server. I will be following up further with Shaw and will advise. Thanks for the advice about Thunder Bay!!

I'm in Winnipeg as well. I'll meander my BlackBerry into a few hot spots over next week and see what happens to my BBM

As of this morning, everything seems back to normal. I must have poked the bear in just the right place. Will advise if the drops start happening again. Thanks

My wife uses shaw open wifi at work and having issues in general. I came to zoo today and same thing, BBM barely works, but Internet in general broken or twitchy. Looks like they having some form of backend proxy problem
