I recently sold my white Z10 and got a black one. I erased all the data but now I'm wondering.. isn't BBM tied to each device? Meaning my old BBM is being used by the person who has it now? I'm also planning to ditch this when I go to the Passport. But if someone else will be assigned my BBM I won't sell.

He is using you pin, not your account.

Once you sign into ur new BlackBerry with ur BlackBerry id, bbm data gets transferred over.

So to clarify. If I get a new phone and I sign in with my account my contacts will move over and people will be able to get a hold of me without me having to alert each person?

Does that also mean that any place I've got my current BBM PIN published I'll need to change? If so, is there a more permanent identifier that won't change when I get a new BlackBerry?

Yes to the first part, it transfers everything over
You'll have to change the pin you have written down anywhere indeed, because you'll be using a new pin
