Sorry I took so long.. trying another experiment.

I grab this cool high rez wallpaper off a website:



Then I took a screen grab of it on my z10 .. and here's the file:



I've copied both files over to my computer and reviewed the image quality. Other than the original high rez file had a square aspect ratio, and of course when I screen capture it I will get a loss of resolution due to trying to fit a square into a rectangle.. I see no loss of quality from the screen grab. What do you think?

ASIDE: I'm gonna try to screen capture one with the same aspect ratio right now..

I understand exactly what you're talking about, Obi_El. I always wonder the same thing regarding the degradation of quality of any pic I use as my display avatar.

I wonder if the better overall quality of the pic leads to less blurrinessm...



When you wife has it set as her display avatar and you go to click on her display avatar, do you notice any change in the picture quality? The change is only visible when the pic is placed as the avatar.

I'll have to check it on my wife's z10 when I get home... basically the image I produced was going into her bbm profile on my z10 and clicking on her avatar picture, then bbm allows me to save on my z10.. so as you can see the rez is high quality.

I'll keep the thread posted when I get my hands on her phone

The BBM version I have is the latest BETA offering Blackberry channels (can't remember what version the latest one is)

Hey Obi! I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I always try and replicate. I wanted to know how you go about changing your display pic. I have a Q10 but I tried and I used a pic I took of a toy monkey (what? It's cute) and it gave me options to crop so I did a little and it came out perfectly as my display pic. It reduced in quality somewhat but it does that to look decent in its tiny format and also not be a burden on data when you or your friends change theirs. If it is a very detailed photo it may end up looking horrible as a display pic.

I dunno. It looks fuzzy but it doesn't matter as most people will view a tiny version of it anyway. But I totally understand. If you put up like a vaca pic and you want your bbm peeps to see it then it kind of hinders it. Ok take care.

No you aren't getting me, use the high resolution wallpaper as your avatar picture on BBM and see if the overall quality of the picture drops, it does for me, gets all blurry.

Good point.. even though the z10 takes a high rez picture, if you end up cropping a small portion of the image, if you happen to blow it up full size on the screen it'll be low rez. very good point eddy_berry.

Therefore, take a closer image so the display image cropped with be at a high resolution and it should look better. I'm sure that's what my wife did.

Yeah probably, or maybe BBM can't handle higher quality pictures so it just reduces the quality of the pic to what suits it.

eddy_berry oh okay I understand what you are saying, yeah it's clearer on smaller screens I checked on my friends Bold and my display picture was clear, but on my Z10 it's a bit blurry, I guess on other Z10's it will probably look the same as it does on mine. Thanks for the heads up though

Yeah, confirmed on my z10.. picture taken of a picture on my z10 vs. my display bbm picture. The result is less resolution and the compression shows a slightly softer image of the original:

I have this problem. I think BB10 devices see your display pic normally but legacy devices see them blurry

Like I said: down scaled to support BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 devices. BlackBerry 8520 had 320x240 screen resolution, it can't handle 500x500 image (which I assume is the resolution your BBM is trying to display)

Basically, cropped-downscaled-upscaled again.
