[OPINION] BBM is totally not fit for business WhatsApp is way better
- Actually, people are lazy and want to download a messaging application and instantly have all contacts added (whom they have phone numbers and other contact information). That is the thing with Whatsapp and Viber (someone correct me on Viber; not sure). They skip the whole invitation process, which is what attracts many in the world (especially my parents and those who just want things to work without setting anything up; case in point, the way Whatsapp authenticates new users, no more copying a code from SMS and pasting it to verify).
Previous BBM versions included discovery option for emails, as BBID is granted by email addresses. The problem with that, in my opinion, is that it only showed that an email address has a BBID, but will not show if they are actively using BBM. That is probably why they got rid of the whole discovery thing.
I had many friends with BBOS devices that switched to Android, iOS, and Windows. On the previous BBM versions (with discovery), I could see they can be added to BBM. Doesn't mean they still use it. So discovery is pointless.
The privacy issue I have been voicing is including phone numbers onto BBID, which in turn would be used for discovery on BBM; as BBM uses BBID, and you can't use BBM anymore without a BBID. I do not want my phone number being associated to my email address(es), BBID, or any login system. That being said, BBM functions differently than Whatsapp or other messaging applications similar to Whatsapp in the sense that you cannot tell whether the person is still using BBM or not. As is the case with email addresses in BBID, the same would apply to phone numbers.
For it to be useful, users must delete their BBID when they switch or decide to stop using BlackBerry products/BBM. That is the only way 'discovery' would even work.
Now tell me how many people populating this planet actually delete their accounts that they no longer use? If it wasn't for Hotmail's policies, I'm sure people would still have their old email addresses even though they no longer use them. Or a better example on social media, Hi5 accounts. Maybe even a Whatsapp user with all privacy options set and stopped using Whatsapp. How many Whatsapp users who migrated to a different application actually deleted their accounts on Whatsapp (especially those with free subscription forever)?

Then messages for the first user are being sent to the new user like what is happening in WhatsApp? I think this would not happen because ultimately it is the BBID that is working not the phone number to send messages.
Phone number is only used for discovery of your contacts.

That being said, it depends more on IM client preference of a country than app functionality. You can't conduct business through an app that doesn't have users. Where I'm from, nobody uses BBM. Whatsapp took a hold of the market a long time a go due to cross-platform availability, then came viber with call functionality and I don't see BBM increasing it's user base here (eastern europe). They came too late in everything and people won't install the 3rd or 4th IM app with basically the same functionality as previous ones. I mostly use telegram nowadays.

No concerns of leaking the phone number to third party. And of course no incoming BBM messages without a prior add request. So where is the big deal?Loc22 likes this.04-04-15 07:09 AMLike 1 - The main reason why I don't use WA, actually why I hate WA, is that all contacts information is uploaded to a server.
I believe in my case the contact profiles contain valuable information, such as pictures, birthdays, postal addresses, e-mails, phone numbers, and sometimes even nicknames.
For me WA is a total privacy disaster, which I will never support/use/promote, only for that particular reason and which I would never ever recommend for business.
BTW, Facebook is a total no go for the very same reason.
However,
There is a feature in the BB 10 contacts app under settings, which allows you to upload your contacts to BlackBerry Cloud Services to find more details... I have never used it, but to me it sounds like one could find friends who are also using BBM.

I guess the gap between the types of institutions those of us here work for is way more diverse than even I imagined.
The whole company-issued versus BYOD has just mudddied things up so much and complicated the most minute (seemingly obvious) things. From having control over everything, just the voice or just the data/messaging, to a weird combo in between. It's all madness!
Just, no comment, my friend lol.

04-04-15 10:25 AMLike 0 - You people sure get off topic. The thread is about a comparison between BBM and Whatsapp as a business tool.
That's all.
As far as this thread is concerned, no one cares what other tools you would rather use!

- Well, whatever business partner ask, just give them the possible one, either BBM, email or whatsapp. Simple.

Then again if it is only email then it's also useless anyway. Most people don't keep email addresses on their phones. Gmail app keeps it for them.

04-07-15 05:40 AMLike 0 - The OP's question did not concern email versus Messenger or Whatsapp. It is Messenger versus Whatsapp. Messenger wins.
With Messenger I don't have to give out my phone number. If I change phone numbers, Messenger travels with me. It is at least lightly encrypted. Whatsapp has a stupid name and is for kids. Whatsapp costs after the first year. BlackBerry is a trusted name. Communication is reliable and global. It is no more difficult to give a PIN than a phone number. Whatsapp gets your contacts.
Using Whatsapp for business is like 40+ year old professionals demanding large chrome wheels on their new SUVs, or wearing Affliction Tshirts. Enough.

Been using WhatsApp for 4 years and I've never had to pay, never been harassed, and have never had a failed message ( that I can remember) .
You are right though, blackberry only had adults and working professionals in mind when the added cartoon smiley faces and stickers :/
BBM is almost much dead in the water. All whatsapp devs need to do now is add video calling and the average Joe will see no real world advantage of using BBM.
I once had just over 210 contacts now 3 who are inactive and If I could I'd delete it off my phone Z10.

The stickers are not business features. I guess Blackberry is trying to stay relevant for consumers and business users who use Messenger for non business communications or are younger and like emoticons and similar crap in their messages.
The business features are reliability, flexibility (features), ubiquity (platforms), light security, interface, and the ability to see when a message is delivered and read. Seeing whether a contact is typing and on or offline are bonuses. Group chats and video sound great but I don't know anyone who uses them. Working with Blend helps me but I don't know whether anyone else cares. I don't care whether anyone has my cell number, and a cell number can follow you just like a PIN--I have had the same cell number for 15 years and I assume that most business users take the steps necessary to keep theirs if they change jobs or phones. Whatsapp has most of the business features and makes it easy to find contacts.
I tried to get my family on Messenger and that lasted about a month. Clients use whatever I tell them to use but they are universally vexed when I first mention Messenger and I am sure most of them delete it when our relationship ends.
The bottom line for me is that Messenger has extra convenience because I use a Blackberry and it is integrated so well. But reading the comments above I think I am justifying it because I use it. I just wish one messenger would take over and that would be the one to use for everyone.

Use of BBM for work communications just happens to work well in some cases for some of us. The features that attract one group of users could alienate others.
BlackBerry just has to make projections about how things might turn out if one decision is taken over another. The survival BBM would be the priority.
BBM works great for me and Blend adds value to my use case.
That last line scares me. Not everything needs to appeal to all. I think that competition (even if one is dominant) can only help things improve for everyone.
Could you imagine where iOS, Android or even BB10 would be as a platform if it was the only game in town?
The way I see it (and the reason why I bought BBM Protected for my device using the guide on BlackBerry Central's site) is that the certain strengths it has are not necessarily of mass appeal or desired/needed by most, but can be just what some niche group is looking for.
Stickers were actually a brilliant idea if you consider the possibility that the objective was just to keep those users in countries that use mostly BBM like reported yesterday on the CB front page. I can't imagine stickers taking many resources to be included in BBM for those that desire to use them.
Maybe stickers are basically a way to make the general consumer think of BBM as a competitor to others, but in reality the real emphasis and energy spent, as stated by Chen, is just on business users.
