The latest update says it has HD Picture Transfer. Anyone know what it is?

I am not sure, I'm hoping it is the ability to send HD pictures by default, but I'm not seeing that in the menu.

They probably only included it in the change log because they renamed it from "HQ" to "HD", since everyone is more familiar with the term HD (even though it's really not technically as correct as HQ).

And they also finally added a clear in-line button to request HD (instead of having to long press and somehow knowing a weird sort of circular frame around a face-like object meant "request HQ")

No you don't. That is an option to accept requests for HD photos. I want to automatically send them.

You can't , but now it's much easier for someone to request it (or to even be aware that the option exists).

Maybe my thinking process is off, so I could be totally wrong here and can be corrected...

Aren't the pictures already sent in HQ, and the receiver is just able to accept them in the HQ automatically? Or, choose not to automatically receive them and will have a lower quality picture to download?

I would tend to think it's possible to make a higher quality picture -> lower quality, but not possible to make a low quality picture in a higher quality without altering it in some way...

No. Initially a highly compressed image is sent (about 30-40kb), when the receiver requests HD, it will request the image from the sender. If the "accept automatically" is toggled to on, then the transfer initiates automatically. Otherwise the sender has to accept the HD request manually.

So, basically two separate images are sent. A highly compressed one, and a less compressed one.

Hmmm. I thought what you stated in the first paragraph is what I just said...

As for the second sentence, that is new to me. I thought all pics were sent in HQ. But would be downgraded if the receiver chooses not to accept them. Didn't know there were 2 independent sets of pics.

Yup. The whole idea is to only use as much bandwidth as necessary. If the HD image is never requested then there's no sense in the sender sending one to some intermediate server where it gets compressed down. The compression is done at the device level for either set of images.

OK. I just didn't know there were 2 sets of independent pictures. I just always thought as you said, it was just handled at the device level from a single picture sent in HQ. Thanks.
