Does anybody know what the current status is on this issue by now?

As brought out in that thread, the communication aspect of BBM is great, but the social side of it is not for all users.

There is an IT policy for that but only for BB10 devices.

Correct. On BES console, there is a specific IT policy to disable BBM channels and any BB10 device enrolled on a given BES will have BBM channels disabled when such policy is applied.
