Here is a thread about that, no one seems to know for sure: http://forums.crackberry.com/showthread.php?t=1136814

The BlackBerry Passport will work FINE during and AFTER 2020... You saw it here. This is not "Y2K" in any capacity. BlackBerry will not wave a magic wand and at boot up, shut down your phone, especially if it is unlocked and not with a carrier. There is too much panic everywhere about our addictive hand sets being jettisoned in every capacity, when, I would not be surprised that you will see the Passport around even up to John's 2023 EOC... So... No need to panic, as BlackBerry built these phones to last; and the Passport? It is a real BlackBerry, the essence of and reflection of all that BlackBerry is and will be. Distinctively one of the best ever made...

BB10 is dead, but the devices will live on.
Same as with Windows Phone and its devices...
VHS and VCRs...
Windows 95/98...
Pagers...
Typewriters...
Telegraph...
Coal-powered flat irons...
Anything else that I missed? 😉
BlackBerry Playbook :)
I wish it were that simple.
If BlackBerry decides to shut down the BBID infrastructure, BB10 devices' workability would be seriously compromised.
No panic. Just facing reality.
I believe it a wise operating assumption that every service operated by BlackBerry will be terminated. As others have pointed out, that could be things we don't even know we don't know right now. I remember years back there was something with the compass that turned out to be a hiccup with something the server does with the sensors or something. I don't remember details, only the surprise that BlackBerry servers would be doing anything like that with something seemingly as simple as the compass. For me, I think it's best case that the device boots up and you can make phone calls and do SMS, and hopefully use the browser and email.
If they shut down BBID, they will no longer be able to validate any of their enterprise software and services administrators. BBID is the universal logon for all BlackBerry customers.
I guess it's possible that BBID for BB10 runs on a completely different set of servers, but that's very unlikely. If I change my BBID password on one service, it instantly updates for all my devices, including BBOS and PlayBook devices that are already EOL, as well as BB10 and my corporate customer account.

My thoughts are prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.
I'm Carjackd and I support this message.
Sure, by 2020 no one should be blindly counting on their BB10 devices working. Many things could break by then, from the 5-7 year old hardware to basic security, to available bands, to. email standards.
But there's a difference between being prepared to upgrade as necessary, which is rational, and upgrading prematurely from an incumbent product due to fear that a phone that is adequate on December 31, 2019 will automatically become inadequate 24 hours later because it's been designated as EOL by the manufacturer.
The likelihood, IMO, is that January 1, 2020 will feel a lot like December 31, 2019 for most remaining BB10 users, who will already have restricted most of their activities to email, calendar, tasks, etc. for the simple reason that very few third party apps, APIs or other services, including many Web sites, will still be usable by then.

Tl;dr: basic functions, works great. Apps and apks are hit or miss. Line app, no call or video.
Passport is a beautiful device, but many apps (yes including APKs) are no supported because they need a n upgrade software. But for calling, messaging, and basic browsing through a reliable browser it will be fine. It even has YouTube. But it you need apps to communicate, then it is hit or miss. I had to upgrade from my classic because I live in Japan and NEED Line app. And line can only do messaging, no call or video. So it became useless to me. Also, when using basic apps sometimes it will freeze your phone and cancel itself out. When I try to load up WhatsApp, sometimes it is too much and I have to wait maybe 2 minutes for everything to refresh and reset. I love passport, but it just isn’t great for a person who relies on various functional applications for communication. Only for someone who is happy with the basics. If that’s you, then it’s still a great, but slightly slow, phone.
