I doubt it will ever be free. The fact that they have provided a 90% discount on it for individual users it pretty great.

BBMe is closed source, and therefore we must trust in BB to produce a secure application. Their primary market is corporate and health industry. So it is safe to assume it is in their best interest to maintain a secure application due to the level of clientel.
While BBM does not require your contact list to work, it does need an email to create the account. This is far better than a phone number in my opinion.

BBM allows for disappearing messages and message retraction/editing, while at the moment, Signal only allows for disappearing messages.

Signal is open source and can therefore be audited by the security community.
It uses your contact list and your phone number, but it does so in as private a way as possible by hashing the numbers, uploading them, comparing them to other hashes, then deleting the data.

An upside to Signal is that it has normal SMS integration.

I currently use both. The downside to Signal is that if you choose to run it without Google Play Services on the device, it runs a persistent notification service on the phone which is really tough on the battery.

You also have to compare features.

Signal is generally regarded as the most secure, mainly because the encryption protocol is open source. But it has a very basic feature-set.

How about Telegram? - another good alternative.

No, that feature is not available. If you need that, then Signal is your best bet.

I use Signal, too. Different devices can be used with one account, you must log-in and you are logged out on the other. But the content will not be synchronised and the newest features will not work with the android app on BB10. So now I prefer BBMe.

You can use it multi-device, but not with (the only end2end encrypted) private chats. These also don't work on Telegram Desktop. So now I prefer BBMe.
