What's the point if I can take a screenshot of the content of the timed message? Ok the other party gets a notification that a screenshot was taken but still...

I can screenshot. But the other person will be automatically notified if I took the screenshot.
And the trust goes down the drain.

Unfortunately, my friend on android got restricted from taking a screenshot.
    Don't know about ios tho.

For me, the point of having self-destructing (timed) messages is not to save me from a friend (or otherwise) taking a screen shot while we are chatting, but one of preventing my conversations being read at a much later date by someone that 'hacked' the service and has access to thousands of conversations.

In the first case, I know the person as I am chatting with them (much less of a security worry) while the second case is much more of a concern.

Don't send confidential stuff to people you don't trust!!!

This feature is to protect you in the event the other persons phone is stolen and maybe they don't use a password or encryption.

Somehow I imagine people on snap chat are doing it with nudes. How many business people send nudes of themselves to clients?

It's not fool proof, but to make things more difficult as listed examples in this thread.

Technically someone could take a photo of the screen with an external camera too. If you are really worried don't send something you don't want to be seen.

As mentioned BBM messages will likely be sent to friends and people you trust.

As it could, it also notify your friend of the screenshot taken.
Which would lead to unreliable friend when we send some sensitive material over bbm which we want them to see ONLY, not save it.

So with that notification, I can tell unreliable friends from reliable ones, is that what you're saying?

Isn't your second case something that needs a general settings on/off switch? As it is now you can send timed messages but you have to do it every time for each message. And then the general settings currently have an option not to save chat history (don't know how this works exactly).

Another thing I noticed while playing with timed messaged these days is that the clock starts ticking once the message is sent - this is ok if the other party has BBM and the particular chat open but if my phone is in my pocket I'm bound to miss most such messages I think

Yes, you are right. Doing it the way BlackBerry has set it up is very cumbersome.

I was hoping for something like they way Path does it where you set a general setting for ALL messages to be erased after a given time, let's say 30 min. Or the way Telegram does it where you start a "secret chat " session with the other person where none of the messages are retained.

    Too bad..

    Yup.. that's what I'm saying...
Then what is the point of sending a timed message or picture if you want to keep it open on your friend's chatline...
