What's up with the quality of BBM display pictures? It's something I've noticed nobody talks about but it's a problem.

If it's a gif, there's a size limit. If not, it's up to the user which they select. Either way, it's a tiny picture. What problem could there be?

huh? I'm talking bout how BBM lowers the quality on your display pictures. The tiny picture's not the problem per-say but when you go to open it, it's obvious how much the image has been downgraded. I can't be the only one experiencing this because all my contacts have a lower quality dp as well

Yes, but the overwhelming majority of the time, you're looking at a tiny avatar. If you want an HD version, you can always ask for it. Why would BlackBerry allow huge images sizes, bloating server load, for the infrequent full sized look?

That's not the point. And I highly doubt that's the reason. If is is then they should do implement a "see higher resolution " picture option just like they did for attachments. Plus I don't think OS7 had this problem

Don't you get the point? Even if you upload high quality image for display picture, BBM will convert it into tiny avatar size. Let's just say 20x20 as an example. So if you view a 20x20 pixel image on your desktop pc or laptop, it will show as 20x20 in size. You can zoom it in but the quality will sure degrade temporarily for viewing. BBM display picture viewer is optimized based on device screen resolution (720x720, 1440x1440, 720x1280,etc) so it will automatically zoomed in to your device screen size.

If you want a high quality version, just ask your BBM contact for it. Easy peasy!

It should have 2 versions of the pic; 1 version that's the 20x20 fuzzu fuzzy for avatars, and a reasonable version that shows up when you enlarge it say 400x400 (this could be 15 kb in size)

    See how whatsapp does it

people are actually defending the terrible picture quality lol

funny thing is I rememeber when crackberry Kevin was showcasing BBM on bb10 (before bb10 release) he was showing BBM icons being high res with the ability to zoom in and out on them.. what the hell happened to that? why is BBM so archaic compared to other messengers out there like whatsapp?

Of all the things BlackBerry needs to work on to make BBM the messenger app, this is the hill you want to die on? Really?!? I can think of 50 more important issues than this.

It's the easiest to fix.. it could simply be 1 line of code

Yes, but the only one that takes up vast quantities of server space, and causes lag, which everyone gripes about.

That's why there's 'Request for HD' option.
