I just read this story Surveillance drives South Koreans to encrypted messaging apps | The Verge and thought that by not offering BBM encryption with private keys to consumers, BlackBerry is missing out on an opportunity with security conscious ppl around the globe.
Just imagine. All those Koreans in the linked story might've switched over to BBM.

telegram is a somewhat interesting choice because it has moderate sized security flaws and makes use of sort of a perplexing approach to the cryptography. BBM Protected (probably) wouldn't be a good substitute as it (iirc) requires an enterprise server. there isn't anything preventing BlackBerry from producing a end to end encrypted chat system with secure key exchange and perfect forward secrecy and authentication and all the modern crypto bells and whistles and they have the expertise and reputation to do it right (at least from a crypto standpoint) but their execution on non blackberry platforms has been pretty hit and miss.

This is quite easily done with BES cloud. I believe that it will be marketed after BES12 is out.

It just seems very nice. All in all around 40$ for best in class security a year....

Is BES cloud available to the average BlackBerry consumer. I'm not on a company BES. I'm a "BIS". Could I pay for BES Cloud and get security?

You don't need BES to have bbm protected and its security, any consumer can buy it. I have and works fine
