    This is an excellent initiative!

Just today I discovered a cool aspect with my Bold 9900 making it superior to any iWhatever that may be out there. During my flight back from work in Stockholm I started to read, answer, send and delete emails on my Bold. Despite having no connection, all my mails to send and delete simply lined up awaiting connection to execute. In a snap at landing, all was done.
On an iPhone I get incessant pop-up messages that I don't have connection and that it can't send my emails. Ultimately the iPhone stops trying, the mail remains in the out box and sometimes never leaves.

Also I've noticed the my Bold functions just great on an Edge connection for mail, BBM, apps and some simple surfing. On Edge both my iPhone and Passport are useless.

It is true on this legacy device the user can't play Candy Crush or Angry Birds, nevertheless it effiencly does what it was created for: communication. And this simple reality meets the needs of many users.

The Bold is a legacy device but it is far from obselete!

from BB10 to BBOS 5 is quite some years backwards.
The only thing he really needs is a device running BBOS 5, like a Bold 9000.
If he wants all his settings and calender and contacts to migrate with him, well, this is a lot tougher.
Since there is no migration assistent for going backwards, he has to rely on other methods.
Calender, he can sync with a cloud service, but make sure it supports BBOS5. Last time I checked, Google did this.
You can transfer your contacts the same way, or just copy it to your SIM card (if you take it with you).

With contacts and calenders, you then have 2 important things migrated.

    Hope I could help him.

There is an app called "InTouch App Contacts" and it works very well for managing your contacts. Upload them from your current device, and then download the app on your 'new' device and it will automatically sync your contacts when you login.
