    Switzerland has four official languages, German is only one of them. And this German has so many very different dialects, each village is different, so that an upper Valais man has indeed some difficulties to understand a Grisons man, while both of course assure to speak German. If a Swiss speaker is in German television they synchronize him completely by a German speaker or show subtitles. This is a shame because the Swiss German language which has survived in the valleys of the Alps through the centuries has still a lot of very old originally German words and terms long extinct in modern Germany and Austria. So speaking Swiss German is like driving a Ford Model T on a German autobahn.
