I'm going to be helping a friend switch from his 83xx to 9700. He basically just uses his BB for company's email through BES. I checked the help screens in Desktop Manager 5.0.1 it looks like the Device Switch Wizard will handle the job, but I wanted to get some specifics from the community.

I believe he is using Desktop Manger 4.7 for his 83xx. Should I install 5.0.1 before backing the 83xx? If not, will I restore using 4.7, or do I have to upgrade to 5.0.1 first? Will a restore work using 2 different versions of Desktop Manager - one version for backup, upgraded version for restore?

Anything else I should be aware of to make it a smooth transition?

    TIA.

it is not necessary to upgrade the desktop version. if you plan to upgrade the verison i would do it prior to backing up the 83XX, my suggestion is update the desktop verision back up the 83xx and restore to the tour. cheers

Agreed. It always helps to have the most curren BDM. v4.7 should be fine. Go and ahead and update BDM first.

Thanks. Any advantage to upgrading DM to 5.0.1? Better transfer reliability to the Bold 9700? "Gotta have" new features? I didn't see any obvious changes between the two versions here

    I had 5.0.1 and swapped from an 8310 to a 9700.

back up the 83xx first then swap, no problems at all. Even transferred my brickbreaker score!

It is up to you. It doesn't take that long. I did a backup of my 9000 on 4.6. Upgraded to 5.0 configured the synch items. When I got my 9700, I used 5.0. Most of the posts included BB 101 recommend having the most current BDM. Start now and your friend could be using his 9700 before lunch today.

Nah you should be fine. Go update to the newest BDM and then transfer all the data to his 9700.. should be cake!

Back the Curve up first. Then, update BDM and then DSW the 9700. Christmas is coming. You don't want to be messing with it all day.

I moved all the settings and data from my 8320 to my 9700 without any problem at all using 5.0.1. Seems like it took about a minute, maybe two.

Hopefully, it went well or at least should have by now. Look at the timestamp of the OP's first post.
