Has anyone been able to use BB Desktop Manager on a Linux box. I see now it's getting to the Mac so I thought I would ask. I using Fedora as my main unit.
i run ubuntu and i have been able to access media type files. as far as back ups and what not i have not delved into the matter too much. i have looked in synaptic and seen that there are scripts available, most of which don't have a gui written for them.
The real hot item would be synchronizing under Linux. KDE has a PIM that has historically had hooks to Palm. Anyone know whether there's any capability to sync with BB? KDE or otherwise?
I have both Ubuntu (Kubuntu actually) and Suse and would be happy to experiment with either.
Most major distros have Barry in their repositories. Barry is a blackberry sync program. It does most of the same functions as DM minus AppLoader functions. It also allows tethering.
I just wish we had a Linux version of DM, which had AppLoader functions so I wouldn't have to use a windows box again. I use Mandriva on my laptop.
Perhaps it would be possible to recompile the Mac version of DM to run on Linux?
if you could find a virtual machine for linux which im sure exist, you could run windows and then use it from there...
I can mount the device on my Slackware64 box, but still haven't been able to build Barry. Working with a fellow who got it to compile and run on a Gentoo 64 bit install, so there may be hope.
Would love to see Barry in action so I can finally kick bloated Outlook to the curb once and for all.
Edit - forgot what i wanted to say :P
I have had zero luck running any version of DM through Wine and WineX, and can't seem to get VMWare with XP loaded to see my USB keyboard, mouse and BB at the same time. As soon as I plug in the berry, mouse and kb go *poof*
As far as Virtual Machines go, give Sun's VirtualBox a shot. I've personally found that it has a bit better USB support than VMWare did.
Another sync option is to use Funambol. There are server options available (myFUNAMBOL portal for instance), but I just installed my own server and use that to sync. The nice thing is that there are plugins for both Evolution and Thunderbird, so contacts / calendars are all synced.
As a heads up, according to some recent comments from people working for RIM, Linux is still a no go and they don't seem to be working on it (they may have someone on it, but if they do, RIM's development team is keeping it very hush hush at this point in time - I'm leaning towards they aren't working on it yet). I think Linux is going to have to gain a lot more interest before RIM gets on developing for Linux.
I run Jaunty Jackalope, and I was able to get DM booted once under wine. Other than that no luck. Trying to get a build of Barry working, but still no luck!!
I've been able to tether with Barry on my Mandriva install.
Well, I guess this answers a couple of questions I had...and since there aren't any *really* recent posts, I will assume that no one else has made much progress (or that I didn't search completely enough...)...
I'm running Mint 7 -- basically Ubuntu9.04 with -- and it gleefully attaches to my BB Tour, brings up RhythmBox to show me it found the music on the SD card and allows me to wander free in the file structure. That said, nothing new to report. I've not gotten DM to work through Wine or in a CrossOver "bottle," as CrossOver's still Wine just with some extra attempts at compatibility.
As far as VMs, go, I'm running VBox with an XPsp3 VM on two different systems and both SEE the BB and even go so far as to try to sync with it, but seem to dwell forever in the "Reconnect to JVM" stage. I've never gotten beyond that point. I'm using the DM that shipped with the BB (5.0.0.8), but haven't found that either using older versions or the "latest" from the website has made any difference.
I'm starting to mess around with OpenSync and Barry...I'll let you know what I find.
Phil
I run Gento on my laptop and I have to use a virutal box with xp in it to update my os. I hope that someone can find some work around so that i can get rid of the VB but Its not that big of a deal to me.
Be nice to see a linux DM, but I doubt we ever will.
Online petition requesting RIM to develop DM for Linux. Not too many signatures from the looks of it.
Blackberry Desktop Manager for Linux - Signatures
Has anyone submitted anything to the devs over at winehq.org for this? While it may not be native it would at least run under the windows API without the VM. And if there's a Mac version then it shouldn't be too difficult to rebuild it for Linux (one would think). I just switched all my machines back to Linux because I'm replacing my Zune with my Storm as my MP3 player. I'd like to see this happen.
I spent months trying to get these to work. I could not get them to sync with KDE/Kontact correctly. I would either get nothing or multiple contacts/calendar entries on the phone. (good thing I always did a backup first! barrybackup works great!) I eventually gave up. I do use barrybackup to back things up, but I also have Vista w/DM and BBSAK.
The closest I got to a working solution was to sync the BB to a folder for contacts and calendar, each contact/calendar entry was a file inside the folder. Then sync Kontact with the same folder. I ran into issues when I changed a contact or calendar entry w/Kontact and then re-sync. Kontact would save the change as new and I would end up with multiples of everything.
I do not use Gnome so I do not know if it would work better or not.
I have always been able to see the BB connected and browse the file structure. Transfer to/from. That part works great! Amarok can see it, transfer to/from. The only thing not working is the contact/calendar sync.
When I connect my Curve 8530 it automatically asks me if i want to use RhythmBox to listen to the music. I can look at all the folders and files in the normal file manager. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10
I've only just recently learned of barry. As I had some trouble syncing on windows with the Desktop Manager in Windows I used Google Sync and that worked much better so I don't really "need" to use another program on linux. although, if there's something I'll be happy to play around and see how it works.
I run Windows 7 and guess what. I CAN SYNC :D
DM Will never work under Wine because wine is an emulator and if you use VM WARE you only slow down your PC.
If i were you i would F Disk my hard drive, create 2 partitions, 1 partition for windows and the other one for linux resullting in a dual boot PC/laptop
