I am changing over to Verizon from Cincy Bell. If I back up my contacts through desktop manager when I plug in my new phone it will all be smooth sailing right? I just don't want to lose my contacts since I am changing services.

Correct. Back up your old phone using Desktop Manager and restore the backup on your new phone and all your personal data will be restored. You'll have to reinstall apps, but you won't lose contacts.
