does upgrading to 4.6 erase info on the device or are you just updating the desktop software?

when you remove the previous version of dm it asks you if you want to keep your setting..... let the box check and you re all good

You just confused me a little here.
Are you saying that if someone updated the DM software from 4.5 to 4.6 it will not update the phone from 4.5 to 4.6 b/c you are saving settings? Or does it update the phone & restore everything it backed up from the previous version?

Just to be safe backup your BB. Using Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs delete DM 4.5

    Then download/install DM 4.6

Upgrading/downgrading your DM shouldn't affect your BB.

here is the confusion you have:

you are confused between the desktop manager update version software and the phone OS.. it s confusing since they kinda have the same numeration.. they are totally different my phone will still runs the 0s 4.6

for example: my phone runs the os 4.6 but i have install desktop manager 5.0 , when i sync my phone i am not gonna have an update of my phone for 5.0 it s totally different

regarding the settings for desktop manager: when you update from a version to another one it will save your setting from your phone and desktop manager , like the way you sync it and the back up if you did some..

is that clear? or you are still confused?

    I'm getting a better understanding.
When I upgraded from 4.2 to 4.5.127 using DM it "knew" to update my phone. So, I can go to DM 4.6 & not get my phone confused about what version OS it has to have? This will not automatically "update" my phone?
But yet, you need DM to update the phone OS.
    See my confusion?
I just may try this tomorrow & see where it takes me..
    Thanks for all the help!

yes because it recognized a new version for you OS that you installed.

    yes

This will not automatically "update" my phone?
it will only sync you contacts, agenda etc.. if you set it up this way... and it will only update for a new os if you installed a new os on your pc, if not, you will still have on your phone the version 4.5.127 and no matter what, you desktop manger will stay version 4.6 if you dont update it for the 4.7 or 5.0

But yet, you need DM to update the phone OS.
yes this is the only way

    Thanks for all the help!.
    any time

    to make it very simple:

on your phone you have a OS
on your pc you have desktop manager
    these are tow different things

in order to get the latest version of you phone (os) to correct the bugs on it you need desktop manager to do the update
there is aslo update for the desktop manager in order to correct some bug or to make it better , like a faster synchronization of the contacts for example...

    Thank You very much....
I probably will read this about 10 more times before it sinks in but I am understanding it better.
I always thought the version of the DM was the version on the phone OS.
I'll get this figured out someday!!

Tony, did you understand everything? Be sure you back up your phone before you do anything. If you have any 3rd party software follow these directions:
