I used to have a Treo and used the Palm Desktop app to manage contacts and my calendar, then sync them to my phone. Is there a way to do that using the Desktop Manager program from RIM? I can't seem to figure it out....

Welcome palm ex user.. I believe that the desktop will help you sync to another app and it does not have the stand alone function of palm. You can sync to other apps or also you can use google sync and sync contacts and calendar wirelessly..

plunkingtom is correct. Desktop Manager enables you to sync your Curve with Outlook and other PIMs, but it does not have the stand-alone PIM capability you had with the Palm desktop.

I suggest you sync your contacts from the Palm to Outlook first then from Outlook to your new BB. That's what I did with my dad's n97 once he sold his BB.
