Hi,
IPD files were once the default for Windows and BBB files were for Mac, however last year RIM changed things around so that BBB files are now the default backup format .. however the new format is actually different from the old .BBB format!
As above - the new files are basically zip files and can be opened easily enough by changing the extension from .bbb to .zip
Inside you'll find many .dat files, these are your individual database (contacts/emails/bbm etc etc) backup files and are saved in the standard format RIM have been using for years.
You can open them in a text editor and try and get the information that way, or use something like phoneMiner which will let you view your data and export to other formats.

Unable to get all the contacts back.
I used the latest version of desktop manager to create backup for my BBTorch and it made backup in .bbb format. I wiped out everything and when I restored it, I don't see most of my contacts/BBM contacts. When I look at the details of the files in the BBdestop software it shows over 800 contact while only 400 are there in my mobile's current backup file. So it did not copy the rest on to my phone. Whats the use of this backup software!!
As some people suggested, I tried using Magic berry 3.5 but it gives some Parsing error. I tried converting .bbb to .zip and then used wordpad/notepad to open the .dat files but it doesn't work. Is there a way for me to see the list of contacts in the backup file?

This is what you need to painlessly restore contacts from your IPD or BBB files to your Blackberry (or any phone for that matter)
